The ‘Me’ Can Hide Behind the Words of Recognition

Even when recognizing non-separation, the 'me' hides behind spiritual understanding by claiming to be the one achieving liberation; the question 'Who is Aware of this Awareness?' dissolves this illusion by showing Awareness cannot be owned.

Seeker

Yeah …It’s still this idea.

Ananta

Still an idea exactly.

Seeker

Whatever is going on. It’s still the Self…

Ananta

Exactly, exactly. Now, the only then doubt remains is that where do we put ourselves in that picture?

Seeker

Yes. [Smile]

Ananta

Because what can happen is that, we can still… like one idea that continues to be the idea of separation is that ‘I am seeing all of these as a limited entity’. So I, Richard can now see that this is what is happening here. So that can remain, can continue to hide as a separate idea. So, that is why I would say… many times I ask this question ‘So who is Aware of this Awareness?’ Because sometimes the ‘me’ can hide in this way, that ‘But for me, it is quite clear there is no separation’. But even in that sometimes… if it is just purely using the words to communicate then it is fine. But if we believe them then sometimes the ‘me’ can hide behind even that little bit of…(you see) even in our words of recognition it can feel like ‘I, specifically as the body- mind, I am coming to this recognition’ which is just not true.

Seeker

This is what is happening here most of the time.

Ananta

Ya, we are placing it as, as something belonging to a limited entity and this what I have been speaking about a lot these days ‘Trying to contain the infinite into something finite’ and then it's seeming like a confusion or but then what is there for ‘me’ to do? But ‘me’ who?

Seeker

But it can’t obviously belong to a limited entity…

Ananta

Of course because we just saw that there is no such limited entity.

Seeker

That is the pointing you say…[inaudible]

Ananta

Yes, exactly. Because what can happen is that (a lot of times it happens like this) we see that there is this Awareness which remains untouched by whatever may be perceived. But the objection that comes is ‘Yes, yes, Awareness is completely fine, but what about me?’ So we still separate. ‘I’ – the big I, which remains ‘I’ the ‘I’… but ‘me’ what happened to the ‘me’? Is that ‘me’ free now? So, this is the trick the trump card of the mind. You are having the greatest insight (it will say) ‘Very good, what about you now?’ You see that there is no separate one, Awareness remains untouched, the Absolute; but this nature of grasping or grabbing that is the habit. So it will say ‘Okay, have I finally got it then? ‘But who is that reference to? Are we talking about the universal God having got it? Who are we talking about? So this is the thing. When is say ‘Who is Aware of this Awareness?’ Then that I have noticed that the distinction between this separate ‘I’ and the reality of ourselves, this distinction starts to dissolve… this starts to dissolve. Because we cannot own it as a separate entity. Because that is just the delusion, that is the Consciousness falling back into its own hypnosis in a way. So we cannot try and grasp at It, own It, contain It.

Key Teachings

  • The 'me' can hide behind even spiritual recognition - using the words of understanding while still believing as a limited entity that is having the experience
  • The mind's trick is asking 'but what about me?' after recognizing Awareness, attempting to grasp or own what cannot be contained
  • The question 'Who is Aware of this Awareness?' dissolves the separate 'I' by revealing that Awareness cannot be owned or grasped as something belonging to a finite entity
