The Idea of External and Internal Is Just the Mind

The idea of external and internal is just the mind dividing experience - this separation is a mental concept, not reality itself.

[Reading from the chat] Can the mind influence external situations? [Smile] The idea of external and internal is just the mind. The idea of situation and non-situation all of this is mind. [Silence] And we don’t know any of these things. [Smiles] We don’t know any of this, but we got stuck in these paradigms, in these perspectives and then we feel like they are true. External to what? And you may say ‘External to the body, I am talking about external to the body’. Now, what is internal to the body? Is that external to you or no? Like the beating of your heart is internal to your body, but you hear it, now would you call that external or internal? That is because this ‘inside’… [when we say] ‘inside me there is peace, inside me it is this’ - we are no longer talking about the body. We have lee this universe actually. But because that is too much for the mind [Smile] it is like ‘it’s so strange that everybody has an experience of this which we call ‘inside’ but how many actually question what is it inside of? [Smile] Inside of what is it? It’s not inside of your body. Inside your body is all flesh and bones and blood, but because this instantaneous letting go of this universe, in the mind’s perspective, is un-fathomable… as if ‘just going inside your body or something like this’ [making gesture of casually going inside]. Don’t say inside the body, inside myself; what is this inside myself? Okay, secondly you can look and see; can you send your attention outside of yourself? How does it go there? Are you not there? [Smile] Send your attention outside of yourself. Because you say ‘outside me, my external situation.’ So, send it outside yourself. How does it go? Is it like sound wave, is it electricity, what is it, light? You will see that your attention never leaves you. So, this idea of external and internal is just the mind. And at the center of these concerns is not you, it is one who is concerned about the life of the limited one. Only when you consider yourself to be the limited one, there is external and internal. So first to put on the mask and then to want to see your original face. [Silence] Just simpler than that. Okay, I just keep saying ‘simpler than that.’ [Smiles] Does the mind influence external situation? No, simpler than that.

Key Teachings

  • The distinction between external and internal is a mental construction, not an ultimate truth
  • What we call 'mind' encompasses both external perceptions and internal thoughts - the division is illusory
  • The apparent separation we experience between self and world is created by the mind itself
