Is That Which Is Beyond Perception More Apparent?

Ananta points to the evident presence of awareness itself as that which is more apparent than any object of perception, since awareness is the foundation upon which perception itself appears.

The Truth Just Is So, every day we are speaking of ‘strange’ sort of knowledge called Self - knowledge; Atma Jnana. Why do I say it’s a strange sort of knowledge? Because it is that sort of knowledge which doesn’t make sense. [Smiles] And it doesn’t have to. And our struggle (if there is one) is about trying to make sense of it. Doesn’t make sense because it is not the type of knowledge that we have gotten used to - ideas and phenomenal experiences. So, there is a mechanism for this sort of intellectual knowledge or perceptual knowledge which could be (we could call) [it] our mind, intellect or we could call our senses but what is the mechanism with which you know your Self? So, because it is not mechanical in that way, you might end up believing that you don’t know your Self. Because it is not mechanical in that way, there is no mechanism to know your Self, you just do. Sometimes when we come to Satsang, we feel like we will come and we will find the ‘way’, [Smiles] ‘What is the way to find my Self’. But you already know your Self, as much as you ever will. It’s just that… that true Self - knowledge seems to be covered up in our idea about it. That’s why we have been exploring this question. All the sages have told us that the Truth just ‘is’ and it just is – here and now. They have said this Truth just ‘is’ and it just is – here and now and you cannot miss it, that also they have said. Then how is it that we seem to miss it? We only seem to miss it when we have an idea of what it must be. And if you can shine your light on this idea that you may have, then it will dissolve, you will see it for the nonsense that it is. Empty of any mechanism, empty of any way, empty of any path. So, all paths [Smiles] if there is such a thing… if there is some use to any path, it is just to dissolve our idea of what standard the Truth must meet or Freedom must meet or the Self must meet. Or even for that matter even ‘What life must meet’. So, this is what we are exploring. Masters have said the Truth is just what ‘is’. Guruji [Sri Mooji] has even called this ‘Is-ness’ a very, very direct pointer. Just what ‘is’, it’s not ‘Is-ness’ plus this or ‘Is-ness’ minus this. Now, what do you want to add or minus? This is very, very direct stuff and for the mind it is pure nonsense. It can’t… it won’t make sense of what’s going on. Because it only understands time, it only understands space, it only understands process, mechanics, ways, paths. So, where are you now with this? Is the question clear - What is the standard that Truth has to meet to fulfil your expectations of it being the Truth? What are the standards that you have to meet, to be the Self? You show me the standard and I will show you what seems to get in the way. That itself is It.

Key Teachings

  • The truth beyond mental perception is more directly apparent than what the mind perceives
  • Awareness itself is that which is always present and evident, even before any object is perceived
  • What we call 'perception' is already a movement away from the simple, obvious presence of being
