Chant Rāma, O tongue; know the Name and lovingly place your trust in it. By chanting Rāma’s Name, the burning within your heart will depart. Let your life rest upon Rāma’s Name and your speech speak Rāma’s Name, which removes crooked Kali’s stain, sorrow, and distress. (1) By the power of Rāma’s Name, Gaṇeśa is worshiped first; he concealed nothing and related his own deed. It is the bridge across the ocean of becoming and, in Kāśī, the means to the highest destiny; Śambhu respectfully chants it together with his wife. (2) Vālmīki the hunter was a fathomless treasury of offenses, yet by chanting “marā, marā” he became worshiped by sages and immortals. By the Name’s power Agastya halted Vindhya and dried the ocean; defeated at heart, the ocean became salty from fear of the brahmin. (3) The Name’s glory is boundless. Śeṣa, Śuka, the wise, and even the Veda describe it again and again according to their understanding. Love of the Name is Tulsi’s wish-giving cow and wish-fulfilling tree; Rāma’s Name is the sun against the darkness of bewilderment. (4)
