यहै जानि चरनन्हि चित लायो। नाहिन नाथ! अकारनको हितु तुम समान पुरान-श्रुति गायो॥ १॥ जननि-जनक, सुत-दार, बंधुजन भये बहुत जहँ-जहँ हौं जायो। सब स्वारथहित प्रीति, कपट चित, काहु नहिं हरिभजन सिखायो॥ २॥ सुर-मुनि, मनुज-दनुज, अहि-किन्नर, मैं तनु धरि सिर काहि न नायो। जरत फिरत त्रयताप पापबस, काहु न हरि! करि कृपा जुड़ायो॥ ३॥ जतन अनेक किये सुख-कारन, हरिपद-बिमुख सदा दुख पायो। अब थाक्यो जलहीन नाव ज्यों देखत बिपति-जाल जग छायो॥ ४॥ मो कहँ नाथ! बूझिये, यह गति सुख-निधान निज पति बिसरायो। अब तजि रोष करहु करुना हरि! तुलसिदास सरनागत आयो॥ ५॥
Knowing this, I fixed my mind upon your feet: there is no causeless benefactor like you, Lord—the Purāṇas and the Vedas sing it. (1) Wherever I was born, I had many mothers and fathers, sons, wives, and kinsmen. All loved for self-interest and bore deceit in their hearts; none taught me to worship Hari. (2) Taking body after body, before whom among gods and sages, humans and demons, serpents and Kinnaras did I not bow my head? Burning and wandering under the three torments through the power of sin, no one, O Hari, compassionately cooled me. (3) I made countless efforts for happiness, but, turned away from Hari’s feet, I always found sorrow. Now I am exhausted like a boat without water, seeing the net of calamity spread across the world. (4) Understand, Lord, that this became my condition because I forgot my own master, the treasure-house of happiness. Now abandon anger and show compassion, Hari; Tulsidas has come for refuge. (5)
