Madhava, in the world none equals me: no one is so utterly without spiritual means, stained, exceedingly lowly, and absorbed in sense-objects. (1) And none equals you—causelessly compassionate, a Lord who renounces all for the afflicted one’s good. I am distraught with pain and grief; compassionate Lord, why has pity not arisen? (2) There is no fault of yours; I acknowledge the offense as mine. Master, you gave me this body, a dwelling of knowledge, yet even on receiving it I did not recognize the Lord. (3) Bamboo and karil falsely blame sandalwood and spring. Lacking heartwood and ill-fated, how can one gain fragrance; lacking leaves, how can the other gain foliage? (4) I am hard in every way, while Hari is tender—this I have firmly concluded in my heart. Tulsidas says: Lord, the chain of delusion will fall only when you release it. (5)
