देव— देहि अवलंब कर कमल, कमलारमन, दमन-दुख, शमन-संताप भारी। अज्ञान-राकेश-ग्रासन विधुंतुद, गर्व-काम-करिमत्त-हरि, दूषणारी॥ १॥ वपुष ब्रह्माण्ड सुप्रवृत्ति लंका-दुर्ग, रचित मन दनुज मय-रूपधारी। विविध कोशौघ, अति रुचिर-मंदिर-निकर, सत्वगुण प्रमुख त्रैकटककारी॥ २॥ कुणप-अभिमान सागर भयंकर घोर, विपुल अवगाह, दुस्तर अपारं। नक्र-रागादि-संकुल मनोरथ सकल, संग-संकल्प वीची-विकारं॥ ३॥ मोह दशमौलि, तद्भ्रात अहँकार, पाकारिजित काम विश्रामहारी। लोभ अतिकाय, मत्सर महोदर दुष्ट, क्रोध पापिष्ठ-विबुधांतकारी॥ ४॥ द्वेष दुर्मुख, दंभ खर, अकंपन कपट, दर्प मनुजाद मद-शूलपानी। अमितबल परम दुर्जय निशाचर-निकर सहित षडवर्ग गो-यातुधानी॥ ५॥ जीव भवदंघ्रि-सेवक विभीषण बसत मध्य दुष्टाटवी ग्रसितचिंता। नियम-यम-सकल सुरलोक-लोकेश लंकेश-वश नाथ! अत्यंत भीता॥ ६॥ ज्ञान-अवधेश-गृह गेहिनी भक्ति शुभ, तत्र अवतार भूभार-हर्ता। भक्त-संकष्ट अवलोकि पितु-वाक्य कृत गमन किय गहन वैदेहि-भर्ता॥ ७॥ कैवल्य-साधन अखिल भालु मर्कट विपुल ज्ञान-सुग्रीवकृत जलधिसेतू। प्रबल वैराग्य दारुण प्रभंजन-तनय, विषय वन भवनमिव धूमकेतू॥ ८॥ दुष्ट दनुजेश निर्वशकृत दासहित, विश्वदुख-हरण बोधैकरासी। अनुज निज जानकी सहित हरि सर्वदा दासतुलसी हृदय कमलवासी॥ ९॥
Lord—Lotus-handed beloved of Lakshmi, give me support: subdue sorrow and still the weight of anguish. Eclipse that swallows the full moon of ignorance, lion against the rutting elephants of pride and desire, enemy of Dushana! (1) The body is the universe, and worldly conduct the fortress of Lanka; it was fashioned by the demon mind, which bears Maya’s form. Its many sheaths are clusters of exceedingly lovely mansions, while sattva and the other qualities make its three principal peaks. (2) Pride in the corpse-like body is its terrifying, dreadful ocean, vast and deep, impassable and shoreless. All its schemes swarm with crocodiles such as attachment; association and resolve are its waves and transformations. (3) Delusion is ten-headed Ravana, and ego his brother; desire, the conqueror of Indra’s foe, steals repose. Greed is Atikaya, envy the wicked Mahodara, and anger the most sinful destroyer of the gods. (4) Hatred is Durmukha, hypocrisy Khara, deceit Akampana, and arrogance a man-eater; intoxication holds a trident. Together with the sixfold enemy, this immeasurably powerful host of night-roamers is supremely hard to conquer and turns the senses into demons. (5) The individual soul, Vibhishana, servant of the feet of existence’s Lord, dwells in the midst of that wicked forest, consumed by anxiety. All the gods of restraint and observance and the lords of their realms stand under Lanka’s ruler—Lord, they are utterly afraid. (6) Knowledge is the lordly house of Ayodhya, and auspicious devotion the lady of that house; there the lifter of earth’s burden descends. Seeing the devotee’s distress, Vaidehi’s Lord obeyed his father’s word and journeyed into the deep forest. (7) All the disciplines leading to liberation are the great host of bears and monkeys; Knowledge is Sugriva, by whom the bridge across the sea was made. Mighty dispassion is the fierce son of the Wind, a comet that burns the forest and dwellings of sense-objects. (8) He destroyed the lineage of the wicked demon-lord for his servant’s sake; he removes the world’s sorrow and is the single mass of awakening. May Hari, together with his younger brother and his own Janaki, dwell forever in the lotus-heart of servant Tulsi. (9)
