The Goal

The Lord as the supreme goal and the soul’s passage along the path of light into irreversible joy.

Verses 176185

I now declare the supreme reality to be attained by such excellent Vaiṣṇavas—great and discerning, masters of the senses, delighting in the Self—the inexhaustible giver of their heart’s true desire.

The goal is the Lord joined with Śrī: ocean of divine virtues, source revealed by the Upaniṣads, giver of refuge, Lord of gods and worlds, without beginning or end, worshipped by Brahmā and the gods. He gives light to stars, sun, fire, moon, lightning, and every radiance; unconquered by enemy weapons, he conquers them again and again.

Eternal, ordainer even of Brahmā, the indwelling Person who gave Brahmā the Veda, refuge of the eternal ones and difficult for yogins to reach by austerity alone, he is the one consciousness of conscious beings, bearer and object of meditation of the world, independent and sovereign. Seekers devoted to him attain him through a true teacher and holy company.

Continually contemplating that beloved goal, the Vaiṣṇava should serve the excellent, recognised guru who lives in right conduct and cuts through every doubt.

Through holy company the seeker becomes free of craving, receives surrender to Rāma from the guru’s mouth, and, centred in the self, exhausts the karma already bearing fruit while the other karmas are destroyed.

Through surrender, aided by the independent Lord and freed from the bond of māyā, the soul receives the supreme grace dwelling in the heart and departs through the auspicious central channel.

On the path the liberated soul reaches flame, then from flame the deity of day, honoured by the gods; from day it reaches the bright and waxing fortnight, moving through ever greater blessedness.

From the fortnight it passes through the six northward months, then the year, the sun, the moon, and lightning, honoured at every stage by the presiding deities.

Guided by the superhuman person along the path of Brahman, it reaches the eternal supreme abode. Attaining intimate union there without loss of identity, it rejoices together with the One attained.

Blessed, bathed in the boundary river and graciously beheld by the Supreme Brahman, the soul reaches the goal and sinks into the great ocean of supreme joy. It never returns from there again.
