Meditation on Sītā and Rāma

Six verses gather the Divine Couple’s form into a concise contemplative vision.

Verses 5560

Now, deeply wise one, meditation is explained. Those who are wholly given to the Supreme, who have mastered breath and senses, call meditation the unbroken contemplation of the one to be contemplated.

Contemplate him whose eyes stretch wide like the petals of a fully opened lotus; whose beautiful smile enchants Brahmā, Śiva, and all the gods; whom Janaka’s daughter beholds with a sidelong glance; and who pours grace upon the good who bow before him.

His lotus feet overflow with visible nectar, kissed by the bee-like minds of sages. His mighty arms, reaching to his knees, bear the wondrous celestial bow and arrows of immeasurable power.

He wears a priceless necklace, armlets, and beautiful anklets, with garments golden as the pollen of a lovely lotus. His body shines dark as a rain cloud. He is the treasury of virtues, an ocean of compassion, seated in the lotus hearts of the good.

I always remember Rāma together with Sītā: Daśaratha’s son, wholly compassionate, the supreme person and refuge of the world, a great festival of joy, whose lotus face bears serene and perfect beauty.

Dearest disciple, those forever devoted to Rāma should meditate in precisely this way upon Rāma in his two-armed form, the possessor of every power.
