English Translation

He who utters Hari's Name with his mouth is entitled to all happiness. He who has Hari's Name on his lips is supreme among all. The Vedas and Puranas raise their arms and declare this truth. Says Tuka, in this matter there is not the slightest doubt; you may be fully assured.

We ask forgiveness for any inaccuracies in rendering Tukaram ji’s original Marathi.

In Plain Words

Whoever says Hari's Name with his mouth has a claim to every joy. With Hari's Name on his lips, he is best of all, through and through. The Vedas and the Puranas raise their arms and tell it so. Tuka says: in this there is no doubt at all. You can rest sure of it.

What it means

Tukaram makes the spoken Name the whole qualification for blessedness. The one who utters Hari's Name is entitled to all happiness and counts as supreme, no other credential required. He calls the Vedas and Puranas as witnesses, picturing them raising their arms to proclaim the same thing. The closing line removes any hedging: there is no doubt here, and the listener can rest fully assured. The teaching levels the field, since the Name is open to anyone who will speak it.

नाम महिमा

The Power of the Name

The supremacy of nama-smarana: God's name as the highest practice.
