कथाकाळींची मर्यादा सांगतों ते भावें वंदा । प्रीतीने गोविंदा हें चि एक आवडे ॥1॥

टाळ वाद्या गीत नृत्य अंतःकरणें प्रेमभरित । वाणिता तो कीर्त तद्भावने लेखावा ॥ध्रु.॥

नये अळसें मोडूं अंग कथे कानवडें हुंग । हेळणेचा रंग दावी तो चांडाळ ॥2॥

तोंडी विडा माने ताठा थोरपणे धाली गेंठा । चित्त नेदी नामपाठा गोष्टी लावी तो चांडाळ ॥4॥

कथे इच्छी मान दावूनियां थोरपण रजा संकोच न लुगडी सांवरी तो चांडाळा ॥4॥

आपण बैसे बाजेवरी सामान हरिच्या दासां धरी । तरि तो सुळावरि वाहिजे निश्चयेसीं ॥5॥

English Translation

Hear the etiquette of the sacred gathering; I shall tell it, so receive it with devotion. What Govinda loves is this alone. Cymbals, instruments, song, and dance; the inner being filled with love. One who sings should be honored according to his devotion. Do not lazily stretch your limbs during the discourse or sniff about the kirtan with contempt. The one who shows disdain is a wretch. The one who chews betel, sits proudly, swollen with self-importance, and lets his mind wander from the Name while engaging others in gossip is a wretch. The one who seeks honor at the discourse, making a display of his dignity, adjusting his garments instead of listening, is a wretch. The one who sits on a cushion while making Hari's servants hold his belongings deserves to be put on the stake, in all certainty. The one who does not bow with folded hands when arriving, who does not call himself humble without being asked, and who walks over others, is a wretch. Says Tuka, I implore the people: do not bring faults into the sacred gathering. Surrender to Narayana with whole-chitta devotion.

The one who does not bow with folded hands when he comes, who will not call himself humble, who tramples over others, is base. Tuka says: I beg you, do not bring your faults into the gathering. Surrender to Narayana with a whole heart.

What it means

Tukaram lays out the etiquette of the kirtan hall and what spoils it. The thing Govinda loves is the gathering done with full feeling: cymbals, song, dance, and a heart soaked in love, with the singer honored for his devotion and not his polish. Then he names the postures that ruin it: the bored body, the contemptuous sniff, the betel-chewing self-importance, the wandering mind that drags neighbors into gossip, the man who comes hunting status and fusses with his clothes, the grandee who sits on a cushion and treats God's devotees as porters. His sharp word base, and even the figure of the stake, is pointed at the pattern of pride, not at hating a person; the test he sets is whether you came to be honored or to surrender. He asks each listener not to carry such faults into the gathering, but to give themselves wholly to Narayana.
