English Translation

The name has saved many, steering them away from ruin. Without any deliberate effort, without purity of conduct, regardless of caste or lineage, the name alone is the cause. God takes birth in the cradle of devotion; He assumes form solely for this purpose. When sins grow heavy and demons oppress the earth, He comes to relieve the world of its burden. Says Tuka, God holds devotion as the highest truth; all His play and dealings exist for its sake.

In Plain Words

The Name has saved many, steering them clear of ruin, when they took it in like nectar. No hard effort, no spotless conduct, no high caste or lineage: the Name alone does it. God takes birth in the cradle of devotion; He puts on a form only for this. When sin grows heavy and demons crowd the earth, He comes and lifts its burden away. Tuka says: God holds devotion as the one essential thing; all His play and dealing are for the sake of that.

What it means

Tukaram sets the Name above every qualification a person might bring. It saves without effort, without ritual purity, without rank or birth; the Name itself is the whole cause. Then he answers the deeper question of why God bothers to take a human form at all: He is born in the cradle of devotion, and form is something He puts on only for the devotee's sake. When the earth groans under sin, that same coming lifts the load. The claim landed is large: even God's descents and dealings exist for devotion, which makes the lowest devotee, with nothing but the Name, the very reason God acts.
