Hail, hail divine Avadh; hail, hail Śrī Sarayū. Wondrous abode in the form of consciousness, stainless like Rāma’s name; beyond nature, supreme and divine Brahman, home of devotion. Your current bears the colour of jasmine and moon, its excellent waves like strings of pearls; O lady who adorns the heart-city, stream through its divine gates, Sarayū.

चारि चारु द्वार चारि मुक्ति मनहु कर पसारि । लेत गोद भीतर भव बाहर नहिं डर जू ॥ दामिनि निन्दरति नीर शीतल यक रस गँभीर । दरस परस मज्जन पिये दुरित दोष हरजू ॥ २ ॥

Four lovely gates—the four liberations seem to stretch out their hands. Taking one into your lap, you leave worldly becoming within and fear outside. Your water puts lightning to shame: cool, of one essence, profound. Seeing, touching, bathing in, or drinking it removes sin and fault, Sarayū.

At every house stands a wish-fulfilling tree; the white mansions form pure clusters. Prosperity and spiritual power sweep the dust and grit outside the city. Unchanging Sarayū through all three times, playground of Lāl and Lalī, fill your stream—born from Raghubara’s heart—with nectar-water.

Avadh is filled with fashioned elephants and pearls, its city and courtyards golden; swans wander on the lake, singing auspiciousness from house to house. The twin banks are dispassion and knowledge, with peace and contentment as jewelled steps; the current is devotion, and sages sport along both shores.

Endless hosts of sages meditate; the wise sing the revealed word. They attain the Lord, while Avadh fills and delights the heart. Praised by Veda and gods, your sound is moonlight to the cakora-bird minds of sages; it breaks the threefold affliction and is frost to the lotus of binding action, Sarayū.

काल जाल गंजनि शुभ अशुभ कर्म खंडनि मुनि । चित आनन्द कन्दनि जिन्ह अवध चरन धरजू ॥ जिय चेत अवध चलजू नहिं ज्ञान कर्म करजू । बसि राम चरण सरजु तीर राम राम ररजू ॥ ६ ॥

You shatter Time’s net and cut away auspicious and inauspicious karma; you plant the root of bliss in the minds of sages who hold Avadh’s feet. O soul, awaken and go to Avadh—do not make knowledge and ritual your refuge. Dwell at Rāma’s feet on Sarayū’s bank and become absorbed in ‘Rāma, Rāma.’
