Fresh English translation
[The first kavitt continues:] ‘—where is the power to behold the bliss of your realm, O divine beauty? Kṛpānivāsa knows Sīyā as a mine of auspicious marks; if she assumes māna toward her beloved, youth itself keeps its distance.’ ‘The bee takes the fragrance of flowers, not the name of their thorns; the lover of the lamp does not forsake its beautiful flame because of the heat. The one devoted to Swāti does not heed the thunderbolt. Yet to the proud beloved even pleasing speech is death. Knowing that the moon bears a blemish, the cakoras still all desire it and delight in speaking of it. Kṛpānivāsa says: Sīyā, why sustain so much anger? What fault belongs to the beloved? Where could one find another beloved so singular?’ (2) Rāga Bihāga, mūla tāla: ‘Friend, your cleverness has come to nothing. You make arguments and contrive meetings—tell me, what clever person taught you this? (1) There is no difference in the beloved's heart; why watch from afar and cause me pain? Kṛpānivāsa says: the lovely one asks, “Whom has the heart-stealing lady come to coax—”’ [the song continues on the next page].
