Fresh English translation
[The Yaman dhrupad continues:] Slowly, slowly, the company of companions sings. (1) Refrain. The mṛdaṅga sounds its tāla—tatākiṭ, thikaṭi thikaṭi, thundhu dhukaṭi, dhuṃ dhukaṭi—in a finely formed pattern. Kṛpānivāsa depicts the beloved on the banks of the Sarayū, dressed in the costume of the supreme dancer. (2) Beloved, your eyes are intoxicated with rasa. Their cutting glances rain down each instant and draw away my life—refrain. Even the mighty heroes of Love's arts cannot withstand them. Kṛpānivāsa says: the discerning Jānakī is entangled in them within her heart. (2) I offer myself to that colorful dark one; my eyes are fixed upon his form. What can I do? I have no power over myself: rasa's radiance has risen through me. (1) Refrain. Casting a spell, he cleverly seized my incomparable heart. Kṛpānivāsa says: once attached, one cannot break free—hear this, O Lord of Avadh. (20) Tīntāla. Beloved Sītā dances, yes, she dances. Her anklets sound jhanananananana; her feet stamp, sway, and turn—[the dance song continues on the next page].
