Ravana Mistakes Rama's Final Teaching for Fear

Ravana hears the wisdom of the three trees and laughs. The counsel offered at the edge of death cannot enter a heart determined to interpret compassion as retreat.
You are teaching me knowledge, he says. When you chose enmity, you displayed no fear. Now, at last, your life appears dear to you. The king turns Rama's invitation away from himself and sends it back as an accusation.
This is the final distortion before the weapons resume. Rama has asked him to abandon boasting, value conduct, and practice forgiveness. Ravana hears only the supposed trembling of an opponent. Gentleness becomes cowardice in his sight because pride can recognize strength only when it resembles pride. The teaching remains true, but the listener seals himself against its rescue and laughs in the presence of the life that is actually about to be lost.
Ravana calls compassion fear because he cannot imagine a strength that does not need to resemble his own.

राम बचन सुनि बिहँसा मोहि सिखावत ग्यान। बयरु करत नहिं तब डरे अब लागे प्रिय प्रान।।90।।
Hearing Rama's words, Ravana laughed: 'You presume to teach me wisdom? When you made war, you showed no fear. Now suddenly life has become dear to you!'
