Angada Asks Which Ravana Once Hung Beneath Bali's Arm

There was another Ravana, he says, whom Bali held beneath his arm. The immense monarch who claims twenty oceans of strength once remained trapped against the body of Angada's father. The envoy does not embellish the captivity. Its bare recollection is enough to make every jeweled head seem suddenly heavy.

Now tell me truly, Angada asks. Which Ravana are you? The question divides the throne from the legend seated upon it. Ravana has filled the chamber with titles, victories, and cosmic images, but Angada places one old humiliation among them and waits for the man beneath the names to answer.

One quiet question enters the court, and Ravana's vast identity can find no place beyond its reach.
