Ram looks across the assembly. Kings, sages, citizens, companions, and queens have become as motionless as figures painted upon a wall. Expectation has stilled gesture and breath alike.
His gaze passes through the crowded picture and comes to Sita. The abode of compassion knows the particular distress hidden within her silence, the ages that have passed for her during his few steps, and the prayer held at the corners of her eyes.
The immense hall contracts into one act of recognition. Before touching the bow, Ram beholds the heart for whose sake delay has become suffering. He does not need her to speak. The indwelling Lord reads what modesty conceals, and mercy answers by refusing to let the moment pass unused.
Among thousands held still, Ram sees the one heart for whom another instant would be too long.

राम बिलोके लोग सब चित्र लिखे से देखि। चितई सीय कृपायतन जानी बिकल बिसेषि।।260।।
Rama looked upon all the people, who stood still as figures painted in a picture. Then the Abode of Mercy turned his gaze upon Sita, knowing her to be deeply distressed.
