Beneath the arguments of the assembled rulers lies a certainty the wise already recognize. Ram will wed Sita, and in that union the pride of competing kings will be carried away like dust from the ceremonial floor.
The princes are sons of Dasharatha, warriors formed in a royal house famed for courage. Even before Ram approaches Shiva's bow, the question resounds through the pavilion: who could defeat such heroes in battle?
Yet their triumph will not arise from a clash of armies. One effortless deed will expose the difference between noisy strength and strength that rests in itself. The kings have arrived seeking victory over one another. Ram's presence turns the contest inward, toward the arrogance each ruler has brought to Mithila.
Before the bow is lifted, the deeper defeat of pride has already begun.
