The Spies See Bharata and Turn toward Mithila

The four observers enter Ayodhya looking not for declarations, but for the shape of Bharata's life. Character must be seen where grief, power, duty, and opportunity meet.
They witness his conduct and learn what rumor could not reveal. Bharata does not move toward a throne. He turns the city toward Chitrakoot, carrying mothers, citizens, guru, and royal preparations in search of Rama.
As Bharata's great procession leaves for the forest, the spies turn back toward Janaka. Two journeys now cross the land in opposite directions. One bears Ayodhya's surrender toward Rama. The other bears the truth of that surrender toward Mithila, so another grieving kingdom may know whom Bharata truly serves.
Having seen Bharata choose the road to Rama instead of the road to power, the hidden witnesses hasten home with their answer.

गए अवध चर भरत गति बूझि देखि करतूति। चले चित्रकूटहि भरतु चार चले तेरहूति।।271।।
The spies went to Ayodhya and observed Bharat's conduct and character with their own eyes. Bharat then set out for Chitrakoot, and the four messengers hastened back to their master.
