Vasishtha understands why Ram speaks. The bridge of dharma and dwelling of compassion cannot look upon the people's suffering without seeking relief.
Yet immediate departure would place another wound upon hearts that crossed so far for a single sight. The guru offers a gentler measure between remaining indefinitely and leaving at once.
Let the people spend two days beholding Ram. Darshan itself may give rest to the weariness that food and sleep could not touch. The answer honors Ram's concern while recognizing that presence is also medicine. Before decisions about kingdom and exile resume, the city is allowed to breathe within the face it loves.
Vasishtha asks for two quiet days in Ram's sight, so a city exhausted by absence may rest where its heart has finally arrived.

धर्म सेतु करुनायतन कस न कहहु अस राम। लोग दुखित दिन दुइ दरस देखि लहहुँ बिश्राम।।248।।
O Rama, you who are the very bridge of dharma, the abode of compassion, how could you not speak so? The people are distressed; let them spend just two days beholding your darshan and find rest for their weary hearts.
