Bharata's questions are full of tenderness. Kaikeyi listens while tears gather in her eyes, but the verse exposes deceit beneath their surface.

She begins to answer. Each word enters her son's ear and heart like a thorn, long before the full account of boon, exile, and death is complete.

The moment holds two incompatible interiors: Bharata's unguarded love for father and brothers, and Kaikeyi's satisfaction in what she arranged. Speech becomes the instrument by which those worlds collide. The son has crossed the city seeking news; now the first sentence begins to wound him into knowledge.

Behind Kaikeyi's wet eyes waits an answer whose every word will lodge like a thorn in Bharata's heart.

Read the passage from the Manas

सुनि सुत बचन सनेहमय कपट नीर भरि नैन। भरत श्रवन मन सूल सम पापिनि बोली बैन।।159।।

Hearing her son's words, so full of tender love, with deceitful tears filling her eyes, the sinful woman spoke words that pierced Bharat's ears and heart like thorns.
