The beloved wife's gentle words reach Dasharatha through the fever of separation. His closed eyes open and turn toward her voice.
For a moment he resembles a dying fish upon dry ground touched by a stream of cool water. Relief does not restore the lake, but it reaches the creature still gasping for life.
Kausalya's courage enters him as tenderness rather than command. The image holds both the power and limit of consolation: love can moisten the final moment, awaken one more response, and soften the burning, yet the absence of Ram remains the element without which the king cannot live.
Kausalya's words touch the dying king like cool water, and his eyes open once more within the drought of separation.
Read the passage from the Manas

Hearing these sweet, gentle words from his beloved, the king opened his eyes and looked up. Like a dying fish, pale and gasping, being sprinkled with cool water.
