Villagers Spread a Resting Place Beneath the Banyan

Someone notices a banyan casting generous shade beside the road. Soft grass and leaves are quickly spread beneath it, transforming the place into a resting ground for the weary travellers.
The villagers ask them to remain for only a moment. Must the journey continue now, or could morning receive the next departure? Their questions are shaped by hospitality, yet also by the desire to delay the instant when the beloved forms disappear.
A tree, a small bed of gathered leaves, and a few earnest voices become the village's entire offering. They cannot revoke exile or shorten the road. They can only place tenderness beneath tired feet and ask time itself to pause within the banyan's shadow.
Under the banyan, villagers spread leaves against weariness and their longing against the onward pull of the road.

एक देखिं बट छाँह भलि डासि मृदुल तृन पात। कहहिं गवाँइअ छिनुकु श्रमु गवनब अबहिं कि प्रात।।114।।
Seeing a banyan tree with lovely shade, they spread soft grass and leaves beneath it. The villagers say, 'Rest a moment from your weariness. Shall we continue now, or wait for dawn?'
