Forest life means sleeping upon bare ground and wearing bark instead of woven royal cloth. Roots, tubers, and fruits replace the ordered abundance of palace meals.
Even these are not assured. Seasons govern what the wilderness yields, and some days may offer nothing at all.
The doha strips exile of ornament. No hidden hermitage comfort is promised, no romantic feast beneath trees. Nothing is guaranteed there. Body must accept earth, bark, hunger, and dependence upon time. Sita is invited to see how completely companionship will ask her to release the protections of rank.
Bark, bare ground, and an empty day stand plainly before Sita without any veil of palace romance.

भूमि सयन बलकल बसन असनु कंद फल मूल। ते कि सदा सब दिन मिलिहिं सबुइ समय अनुकूल।।62।।
Sleeping on the bare ground, wearing garments of bark, eating only kanda, phala, and moola; this is the life of the forest. And even these will not always be found. Everything depends upon the season. Some days there may be nothing at all.
