Dasharatha pleads in a hundred ways and finally collapses. Again he asks why Kaikeyi is bringing ruin upon the house that loves her.
She offers no answer. The queen sits awake, watchful and unmoved, while the king lies broken beside her.
The doha turns the chamber into a cremation ground at midnight. Nothing has yet burned visibly, but warmth, kinship, celebration, and hope already seem extinguished within its walls. No lamp can soften her stillness. Kaikeyi's silence stands like dark earth awaiting the funeral fire that dawn will carry through Ayodhya.
Beside the fallen king, Kaikeyi keeps watch in a chamber already silent as a midnight cremation ground.
Read the passage from the Manas
परेउ राउ कहि कोटि बिधि काहे करसि निदानु। कपट सयानि न कहति कछु जागति मनहुँ मसानु।।36।।
The king collapsed, having pleaded with her in a hundred ways: 'Why are you bringing about this ruin?' But the cunning deceiver said nothing, sitting awake like a cremation ground at midnight.
