Manthara Paints a Prison around Bharata

Manthara reaches into ancient rivalry, comparing Kausalya to Kadru and Kaikeyi to the afflicted Vinata. Myth is made into prophecy, giving suspicion the authority of remembered suffering.
She then paints Bharata labouring in prison while Lakshmana serves Ram. The brothers' actual love disappears inside a scene of domination fabricated to terrify a mother.
The image is powerful because it targets what Kaikeyi most wishes to protect. Manthara does not prove danger; she makes the queen see it. Once an imagined prison becomes vivid enough, the joyful palace can begin to look like its outer wall.
Before any chain exists, Manthara makes a mother's fear hear iron closing around Bharata.

कद्रूँ बिनतहि दीन्ह दुखु तुम्हहि कौसिलाँ देब। भरतु बंदिगृह सेइहहिं लखनु राम के नेब।।19।।
As Kadru once gave sorrow to Vinata, so Kaushalya will give sorrow to you. Bharata will toil in the prison-house, and Lakshmana will serve as Rama's menial.
