Kaikeyi Presses Truth like Salt into the King's Wound

Seeing Dasharatha's anguish, Kaikeyi grows more enraged. Is Bharata not his son? Was she purchased in a market? If her words strike like arrows, will the king honour the promised boons or abandon truth?
She invokes the Raghu vow and the sacrifices of Shibi, Dadhichi, and Bali, who gave body and wealth rather than break a pledge. Dasharatha's own praise of truth is turned against his grief.
Each cruel argument is fact shaped without compassion. Kaikeyi pours salt upon a burning wound, presenting hesitation as hypocrisy and love for Ram as injustice toward Bharata. The king's dharma is narrowed until only the demand remains visible.
Kaikeyi takes the king's devotion to truth and grinds it like salt into the wound of his love.

एहि बिधि राउ मनहिं मन झाँखा। देखि कुभाँति कुमति मन माखा।। भरतु कि राउर पूत न होहीं। आनेहु मोल बेसाहि कि मोही।। जो सुनि सरु अस लाग तुम्हारें। काहे न बोलहु बचनु सँभारे।। देहु उतरु अनु करहु कि नाहीं। सत्यसंध तुम्ह रघुकुल माहीं।। देन कहेहु अब जनि बरु देहू। तजहुँ सत्य जग अपजसु लेहू।। सत्य सराहि कहेहु बरु देना। जानेहु लेइहि मागि चबेना।। सिबि दधीचि बलि जो कछु भाषा। तनु धनु तजेउ बचन पनु राखा।। अति कटु बचन कहति कैकेई। मानहुँ लोन जरे पर देई।।
In this way the king reproached himself within his heart. Seeing his anguish, the wicked-minded Kaikeyi grew only more enraged. "Is Bharat not your own son? Did you buy me for a price at some market? If hearing my words wounds you like arrows, why do you not speak with some care and composure? Give your answer: will you honor the boons or not? You, who are pledged to truth in the Raghu line. You promised to give the boons; now refuse to give them. Cast away truth and earn disgrace before the world. You praised truth and vowed to grant whatever I asked, thinking I would only ask for something trivial. Whatever Shibi, Dadhichi, and Bali pledged, they gave up body and wealth to keep their word." Kaikeyi spoke these bitterly cruel words, as though pouring salt upon a burning wound.
