Rama kneels beside the fallen king of birds. Wings severed and body broken, Jatayu has preserved his life through the long agony for this meeting. The ocean of compassion reaches toward him with a lotus hand.
Raghubira places that hand upon Jatayu's head. The touch arrives where sword, fall, age, and battle have gathered their pain. Nothing is argued and no medicine is prepared. Mercy passes through the simple contact.
Jatayu raises his eyes to Rama's face, the abode of beauty. In the sight for which he kept breathing, all suffering vanishes. The ruined body remains upon the forest earth, but pain has already withdrawn before the Lord whose beloved he tried to save.
One lotus hand rests upon the wounded head, and the whole battle leaves Jatayu's body.
Read the passage from the Manas
कर सरोज सिर परसेउ कृपासिंधु रधुबीर।। निरखि राम छबि धाम मुख बिगत भई सब पीर।।30।।
The ocean of kripa, the hero of Raghu's line, touched Jatayu's head with his lotus hand. Beholding Rama's beautiful face, the very abode of splendor, all of the vulture's pain vanished completely.
