Lakshmana's Swift Blade Sends a Challenge toward Ravana

Lakshmana understands Rama's sign. His movement is so swift that the moment seems to contract around the blade, and Surpanakha is left without nose and ears.
The injury stops her advance upon Sita, but it does not remain a private event inside Panchavati. Her altered face will carry the encounter outward through the demon kindred of the forest and finally toward Lanka.
The poet sees in that wounded form a challenge delivered to Ravana himself. No messenger has yet crossed the sea, and Ravana has heard no words, yet the summons has begun. The blade in Lakshmana's hand opens the next movement of the divine play, and the quiet grove now stands connected to a distant throne.
Surpanakha flees from Panchavati carrying upon her face the first challenge sent toward Lanka.

With great swiftness, Lakshmana cut off her nose and ears. Through her wounded form, it was as if he had sent a challenge straight to Ravana himself.
