Lakshmana places the central distinction before Rama: explain fully the difference between Ishvara and the jiva, between the Lord and the individual soul.
The question is not asked to enlarge philosophy for its own sake. Lakshmana names the fruit he seeks. Through true understanding, love for Rama's feet should arise, while grief, delusion, and confusion lose their hold.
Knowledge and devotion therefore enter the same request. If the distinction is understood rightly, it does not leave the seeker standing at a distance with a concept. It clears what obscures love and turns the mind toward service. Beneath Panchavati's living canopy, metaphysics is asked to become freedom from sorrow and a more intimate resting at the Lord's feet.
Lakshmana asks for knowledge whose proof will be the end of confusion and the birth of love at Rama's feet.

ईस्वर जीव भेद प्रभु सकल कहौ समुझाइ।। जातें होइ चरन रति सोक मोह भ्रम जाइ।।14।।
O Lord, please explain to me fully the difference between Ishvara and the jeeva. Through that understanding, may love for Your sacred feet take root in my heart, and may grief, delusion, and confusion depart forever.
