जब रघुबीर पयानो कीन्हों। छुभित सिंधु, डगमगत महीधर, सजि सारँग कर लीन्हों॥ १ ॥ सुनि कठोर टंकोर घोर अति चौके विधि-त्रिपुरारि। जटापटल ते चली सुरसरी सकत न संभु सँभारि॥ २ ॥ भए बिकल दिगपाल सकल, भय भरे भुवन दस चारि। खरभर लंक, ससंक दसानन, गरभ स्त्रवहिं अरि-नारि॥ ३ ॥ कटकटात भट भालु, बिकट मरकट करि केहरि-नाद। कूदत करि रघुनाथ-सपथ उपरी-उपरा बदि बाद॥ ४ ॥ गिरि-तरुधर, नख मुख कराल, रद कालहु करत बिषाद। चले दस दिसि रिस भरि ‘धरु धरु’ कहि, ‘को बराक मनुजाद?’॥ ५ ॥ पवन पंगु पावक-पतंग-ससि दुरि गए, थके बिमान। जाचत सुर निमेष, सुरनायक नयन-भार अकुलान॥ ६ ॥ गए पूरि सर धूरि, भूरि भय अग थल जलधि समान। नभ-निसान, हनुमान-हाँक सुनि समुझत कोउ न अपान॥ ७ ॥ दिग्गज-कमठ-कोल-सहसानन धरत धरनि धरि धीर। बारहि बार अमरषत, करषत, करके परी सरीर॥ ८ ॥ चली चमू, चहु ओर सोर, कछु बनै न बरने भीर। किलकिलात, कसमसत, कोलाहल होत नीरनिधि-तीर॥ ९ ॥ जातुधानपति जानि कालबस मिले बिभीषन आइ। सरनागत-पालक कृपालु कियो तिलक लियो अपनाइ॥ १० ॥ कौतुकही बारिधि बँधाइ उतरे सुबेल-तट जाइ। तुलसिदास गढ़ देखि फिरे कपि, प्रभु-आगमन सुनाइ॥ ११ ॥
When Raghubīra set forth, the ocean surged and mountains swayed; he strung his bow and took it in hand. (1) Hearing its exceedingly hard and terrible twang, Brahmā and the destroyer of Tripura started. Gaṅgā slipped from the mass of Śiva’s matted locks, and Śambhu could not hold her. (2) All guardians of the directions grew distraught and the fourteen worlds filled with fear. Laṅkā shook, the ten-headed one trembled, and the enemy’s women miscarried. (3) Warrior bears gnashed their teeth and fierce monkeys roared like lions. Swearing by Raghunātha and wagering with one another, they leapt in rivalry. (4) Bearing mountains and trees, with terrible nails, faces, and teeth that distressed even Time, they advanced through all ten directions crying in fury, “Seize him! Seize him! What wretched demon could stand?” (5) The wind went lame; fire, sun, and moon were hidden; celestial chariots grew exhausted. The gods begged leave to blink, while the lord of the gods reeled beneath the burden upon his eyes. (6) Lakes filled with dust and many uplands, torn open in fear, became like seas. Amid heaven’s drums and Hanumān’s roar, no one could understand even his own words. (7) The elephants of the directions, the tortoise, the boar, and thousand-headed Śeṣa gathered courage to uphold the earth, again and again straining in anger until their bodies cracked. (8) As the army marched, noise spread everywhere; the multitude cannot be described. Monkeys shrieked and pressed against one another while tumult covered the ocean shore. (9) Seeing the lord of demons subject to Time, Vibhīṣaṇa came and joined Rāma. The compassionate protector of those who seek refuge anointed him and accepted him as his own. (10) Almost in play, Rāma had the ocean bridged and crossed to Mount Suvela’s shore. Tulsīdāsa says the monkeys inspected the fortress and returned to announce the Lord’s arrival. (11)
