As he looks upon Sītā’s ornaments and garments, the beloved’s mind is overcome by love; his body trembles and thrills, and water fills the lotuses of his eyes. (1) He hesitates to speak, while remembrance of his wife’s character, affection, and host of virtues surges within. Seeing their master’s state, Lakṣmaṇa, Sugrīva, and the monkeys melt like jars of ghee held to a flame. (2) Thinking again and again of the loss and injury, they grieve as if every fruit of their merit has been exhausted. At that moment Jāmbavān speaks words seeded with discernment and heroic spirit. (3) Hearing and understanding him, those steadfast heroes reveal to one another the strength and strategies within their hearts. Tulsīdāsa says that any poet who describes this moment seems utterly hard-hearted and insensible. (4)
