Today is a blessed day, a lovely and auspicious hour. Rāma, the abode of beauty, character, and virtue, has appeared in the king's palace. (1) The holy spring month, ascendant, planets, weekday, and conjunction are all supremely pure. All that moves and does not move rejoices; the hairs rising on the Brahmins' bodies proclaim their thrill. (2) Hosts of gods beat celestial drums and shower garlands of flowers. The hearts of Kausalyā and the other mothers rejoice; this happiness cannot be described. (3) Hearing that a son was born, Daśaratha summoned all the elders, teachers, and Brahmins. With perfect purity he performed the rites prescribed by the Veda; joy would not fit within his heart. (4) In the palace the sages sweetly sound the Veda, and many kinds of congratulatory music play. For their beloved lord, the people of the city lavish away their own wealth. (5) Jeweled festoons and countless banners and flags cover the lovely city. At the gates, Māgadhas, Sūtas, and court bards proclaim praise everywhere. (6) Women in their natural finery come bearing abundant auspicious offerings. They sing and joyfully bless the child: “May this giver of happiness live long!” (7) The lanes are a mire of saffron; fragrant powder, aloe, and colored dust fly. The city's men and women dance, so full of love that they forget the state of their bodies. (8) The king gives countless cows, elephants, horses, garments, jewels, and heaps of gold, giving each person whatever befits them; every accomplishment has come home. (9) Gods, saints, and Brahmins are happy, while the hearts of the wicked grow dark— as every flower opens when the sun rises, but the water-lily grove pines. (10) A single drop from that ocean of bliss gave Śiva and Brahmā their sovereignty; that same bliss now surges through all ten directions of Ayodhyā—by what means could it be sung? (11) The destiny of those who contemplate Raghubīra's feet is here made manifest. Then Tulsīdāsa obtained firm devotion—unceasing, stainless, and beyond compare. (12)
