Publisher’s Statement

An unchanging and stainless gaze is needed to drink the nectar of such beauty. Only devotees and saints can possess that faultless vision. This book describes the worship practised by saints and devotees of that order in an extraordinarily moving style. Wherever works devoted to this worship are discussed, one feels that when the authentic devotional literature of the sweet disposition becomes available, the beauty and sweetness of Lord Rama will entice even those devotees of sacred restraint who worship Rama principally as the austere ascetic and heroic champion of the battlefield.

The author presently serves as a deputy director in the Education Department of Bihar State. He is also a member of this Parishad and of the Court of Banaras Hindu University. Earlier he was principal of Sachchidanand Singh Degree College in Aurangabad, Gaya. Before that, he served as chief editor of the celebrated Prayag monthly Chand, the weekly Bhaviṣya, and Kashi’s weekly Sanātana Dharma. For ten years, from 1932 to 1942, he was joint editor of the Gita Press Hindi monthly Kalyan and its English monthly Kalyana-Kalpataru.

He comes from Shahabad district. In 1930 he received master’s degrees in Hindi and English from Banaras Hindu University. His contribution to Hindi spiritual literature is noteworthy, and he has a particular interest and inclination toward writing on devotional literature. His published books reveal his cultivated taste: Mīrā kī Prema-sādhanā, Dhūpa-dīpa, Santa-sāhitya, and Mere Jīvana-maraṇa ke Sāthī. The sentiments expressed by the sensitive author in the first and last of these works will be seen in developed form in the present book.

The Bihar Rashtrabhasha Parishad publishes works especially suited to literary research. We hope that study of this volume will give scholars ample inspiration to advance research in this direction.
