Chapter Six: The Rasika Lineage of Rama Worship

The lineage written by Raghubar Sharan of Janmasthan in Rahasya is:

  1. Sriman Narayana
  2. Sri Lakshmi
  3. Sri Vishvaksena
  4. Sri Bopadeva
  5. Sri Shathakopa
  6. Sri Nathamuni
  7. Sri Pundarikaksha
  8. Sri Ramamishra
  9. Sri Yamuna Muni
  10. Sri Parankusha and his five disciples
  11. Shrutadeva, Shrutaprajna, Shrutavama, Shrutodadhi, and the fifth, Sri Ramanuja Svami
  12. Sri Kuresha
  13. Sri Parashara Bhatta
  14. Sri Lokacharya
  15. Sri Devadhipacharya
  16. Sri Shailesha
  17. Sri Varavara Muni
  18. Sri Purushottama
  19. Sri Gangadhara
  20. Sri Sadacharya
  21. Sri Rameshvara
  22. Sri Dvarananda
  23. Sri Devananda
  24. Sri Shyamananda
  25. Sri Shrutananda
  26. Sri Chidananda
  27. Sri Purnananda
  28. Sri Shriyananda
  29. Sri Harshananda
  30. Sri Raghavananda
  31. Sri Ramananda.

This lineage is composed in verse and accepted by many scholars. Its arrangement, however, raises difficulties. The established lineage of enthroned teachers from Narayana through Varavara Muni contains no trace of Bopadeva, so it is unclear how he entered this list. Ramanuja is famously a disciple of Mahapurnacharya, yet here he is made the fifth among Parankusha’s disciples after Shrutadeva, Shrutaprajna, and the others. Moreover, Varavara Muni was born seventy-one years after Ramananda; how then could he be named Ramananda’s fourteenth predecessor? Scholars should consider these points.

With Bopadeva omitted, a lineage of this type is also printed in Vaiṣṇava Dharma Ratnākara.
