Obeisance to the son of the sovereign cowherd. May Murāri, dwelling in the forest and justly driving the young girls mad with love, destroy every desire in you for anything else, for you have offered your affection to that blessed one.

On every side the accomplished young women undertake their vow, praising Girijā and bathing in the water. Full of innocent joy and still in the freshness of childhood, the cowherd girls stand unclothed by the directions while their garments lie upon the bank. Playful, fascinating as Love himself, and intent upon rasa, Kṛṣṇa conceives his plan. Swiftly stealing the clothes from among the girls' possessions together with his friends, he climbs a kadamba tree on the wooded bank according to his own delight. Mercifully he has the girls bathed, yet he also makes them tremble; an expansive row of clean cloth rests upon the broad branch. His laughter shines as he calls, ‘O delighted girls, hear my effortless words. Come here together, or one by one if you prefer, openly displaying your charming movements, and take your clothes. Do not resort to deceit, for from the time of my birth I have never spoken an untruth. Lalitā and my moon-hearted friends, radiant with fine reputations, know this. I do not speak so suddenly merely from laughter. Alas, all of you have become exhausted by the vow.’ Speaking in this way and displaying his cleverness, the exceedingly restless one warns them not to quarrel. The girls reply, ‘Give us our clothes today; do not deceive us. O giver of rasa, we shall always carry out your command, devoted to your service and to no one else. But if you do not, O cheater, we shall quickly report every one of your deeds to your powerful queen, with words born of swelling anger.’ Angry and weeping, their bodies shining within the cold, numbing Yamunā water, they shake violently and cast their lovely, restless glances in many ways. Hearing them, their constant beloved shines all the more with the moonlight of his smile and says, ‘If you women are not seized by distrust of the nectar of my words, then come out from the water, approach this kadamba, and joyfully accept your own garments and ornaments. Abandon the improper contraction within your hearts. Otherwise I certainly shall not give you the clothes. What could that king, filled with anger, do to me, whose valor is so abundant?’ Having spoken this spotless declaration, he rises delighted like the moon and turns a lotus in his hand. Shaking his own head, he watches the doe-eyed girls. Alas, by bathing naked they have incurred an offense to the lord of the waters. ‘Enough—place the radiant, beautiful pair of your hands together upon your heads at once, with purity, so that the sin may be destroyed.’ Receiving intoxication and bewildering delight in their hearts from the honey of his words, the rows of girls cast rare glances and form añjalis. Sweet Kṛṣṇa, fulfilling their heart-desire, bows playfully and gives the girls their garment ornaments as they bow, his affection visibly sprouting. Surrounded by companions who are utterly delighted and thirsty with love, the girls remain bent by shyness and meet their beloved, bearing fresh passion and radiant beauty. Before them the sprout of his smile appears; their tongues become still, their shining garments disordered, their bodies trembling greatly, and the tips of their hands moving. Having granted the desired blessing to the host of girls, that foremost lover, encircled by deeply joyful friends, plays many new, sweet flute melodies. He raises the beautiful girls' minds, already overwhelmed by longing, and intoxicates them with delight. Mercifully he sends the delighted girls home, himself filled with joy, a fresh cluster of flowers at his ear. All glory, O destroyer of Keśī and ornament and shelter of the worlds! Roam freely, awakening the deepest love among your own people. O Lord with reddish lips, show mercy to me, though my heart is wicked and devoid of feeling.

This is the Kusuma-stavaka meter. O Mukunda, when even the faint, tender sprout of that love touches the sages' inner minds, they instantly lose all taste even for the happiness of liberation they have experienced. Who can dare to pray for such love? Yet birth after birth, may my longing for it continue to increase.
