नमः श्रीव्रजनागराय । (भुजङ्गप्रयात छन्दः) अवज्ञाय भर्तुर्महाघोरदण्डं गुरोर्भाषितं च व्यतिक्रम्य चण्डम् । निषेधोद्धुरां किङ्करीमाक्षिपन्ती हरे कृष्ण नाथेति बाला जपन्ती ॥ १॥

namaḥ śrīvrajanāgarāya | (bhujaṅgaprayāta chandaḥ) avajñāya bharturmahāghoradaṇḍaṃ gurorbhāṣitaṃ ca vyatikramya caṇḍam | niṣedhoddhurāṃ kiṅkarīmākṣipantī hare kṛṣṇa nātheti bālā japantī || 1||

Obeisance to Vraja's gallant lover. Bhujaṅga-prayāta meter. Disregarding her husband's most terrible punishment, transgressing her elder's fierce command, and thrusting aside the maidservant who strongly forbade her, the young girl repeated, ‘Hari! Kṛṣṇa! My protector!’

रसन्मेघजाले तडिद्भिः कराले गलद्वारिधारे दुरन्तान्धकारे । मिलद्भूरिदोषे सखि मे प्रदोषे प्रयाणाय लज्जामनादृत्य सज्जा ॥ २॥

rasanmeghajāle taḍidbhiḥ karāle galadvāridhāre durantāndhakāre | miladbhūridoṣe sakhi me pradoṣe prayāṇāya lajjāmanādṛtya sajjā || 2||

O friend, at nightfall, though a mass of clouds roared, fearful with lightning and pouring streams of rain through impenetrable darkness, and though countless dangers gathered, she ignored her shame and prepared to depart.

(युग्मकम्) अदूरोल्लसद्भल्लूकारब्धयुद्धां वलद्दन्दशूकावलीभोगरुद्धाम् । समन्दाद् ध्वनद्वायसारातिभीमां रसोत्फुल्लमुल्लङ्घ्य कान्तारसीमाम् ॥ ३॥

(yugmakam) adūrollasadbhallūkārabdhayuddhāṃ valaddandaśūkāvalībhogaruddhām | samandād dhvanadvāyasārātibhīmāṃ rasotphullamullaṅghya kāntārasīmām || 3||

This forms a pair with the preceding verse. She crossed the boundary of the wilderness, flourishing with rasa yet terrifying with the slow, deep cries of jackals, blocked by the expanded coils of moving snakes, and filled nearby with the fighting begun by bears.

प्रविश्यानवद्यं लतागेहमध्यं धृतौत्सुक्यचक्रा निसर्गादवक्रा । नखाग्रप्रसूनैः सुगन्धिप्रसूनैः पयःफेनकल्पं व्यधत्तेह तल्पम् ॥ ४॥

praviśyānavadyaṃ latāgehamadhyaṃ dhṛtautsukyacakrā nisargādavakrā | nakhāgraprasūnaiḥ sugandhiprasūnaiḥ payaḥphenakalpaṃ vyadhatteha talpam || 4||

Entering the flawless interior of the vine-bower, her natural honesty surrounded by circles of eagerness, she made a bed like milk foam from fragrant blossoms soft as the tips of fingernails.

(युग्मकम्) प्रणीतेक्षणेयं मुहुस्ते पदव्यां दधाना मुकुन्द स्पृहां नव्यनव्याम् । अलब्धं ततस्त्वामवेत्यातिखिन्ना बभूव प्रसूनेषुबाणैर्विभिन्ना ॥ ५॥

(yugmakam) praṇītekṣaṇeyaṃ muhuste padavyāṃ dadhānā mukunda spṛhāṃ navyanavyām | alabdhaṃ tatastvāmavetyātikhinnā babhūva prasūneṣubāṇairvibhinnā || 5||

This forms a pair with the preceding verse. Again and again she directed her eyes toward your path, O Mukunda, bearing an ever-new longing for you. Then, understanding that you had not come, she became utterly distressed, pierced by the flower arrows of Love.

सुकण्ठी शठेयं भजन्ती प्रजल्पं मुहुर्भावयन्ती निमेषं च कल्पम् । चकाराद्य कुञ्जे बतालब्धकामे सखी जागरं सम्भ्रमादेकिका मे ॥ ६॥

sukaṇṭhī śaṭheyaṃ bhajantī prajalpaṃ muhurbhāvayantī nimeṣaṃ ca kalpam | cakārādya kuñje batālabdhakāme sakhī jāgaraṃ sambhramādekikā me || 6||

O cheater, my sweet-voiced friend spent this night alone and bewildered in the grove, endlessly lamenting and experiencing each instant as an age. Alas, her desire remained unfulfilled.

अहो भाग्यमद्य प्रपन्नोऽसि सद्य स्त्वमस्मिन्नगारे यदारान् मुरारे । सखीवृन्ददृष्टिर्धृतानन्दवृष्टि र्बभूवात्तरङ्गं विलोक्य त्वदङ्गम् ॥ ७॥

aho bhāgyamadya prapanno'si sadya stvamasminnagāre yadārān murāre | sakhīvṛndadṛṣṭirdhṛtānandavṛṣṭi rbabhūvāttaraṅgaṃ vilokya tvadaṅgam || 7||

Ah, what good fortune—you have suddenly arrived at this dwelling today, O Murāri. Seeing your body from afar, the gaze of the circle of her friends has become a streaming shower of joy.

दुकूलस्य लक्ष्मीं समन्ताद् विशालां असौ वीक्ष्य पीतस्य ते मल्लिमाला । लुठन्ती कुचोद्भासिकाश्मीरपङ्के निजं पीतमङ्गं चकाराद्य शङ्के ॥ ८॥

dukūlasya lakṣmīṃ samantād viśālāṃ asau vīkṣya pītasya te mallimālā | luṭhantī kucodbhāsikāśmīrapaṅke nijaṃ pītamaṅgaṃ cakārādya śaṅke || 8||

Seeing the vast beauty of your yellow silk everywhere, I suspect that the jasmine garland rolling in the saffron paste shining upon another woman's breasts has stained its own pale body yellow today.

विकीर्णालकान्तः परिश्रान्तिकान्त स्तव व्यक्ततन्द्रः स्फुरत्यास्यचन्द्रः । कृतानङ्गयागं विभक्ताङ्गरागं नखाङ्कालिपात्रं तथेदं च गात्रम् ॥ ९॥

vikīrṇālakāntaḥ pariśrāntikānta stava vyaktatandraḥ sphuratyāsyacandraḥ | kṛtānaṅgayāgaṃ vibhaktāṅgarāgaṃ nakhāṅkālipātraṃ tathedaṃ ca gātram || 9||

The moon of your face shines with loosened curls, lovely from exertion and plainly drowsy. Your body too bears divided cosmetics, the marks of rows of nails, and the evidence of a completed sacrifice to Love.

स्फुरद्बन्धुजीवप्रसूनाप्तसङ्गं परिस्पर्धमानो विलासेन भृङ्गम् । मुदं कस्य बिम्बाधरस्तेन रक्तः करोत्युज्ज्वलां कज्जलेनाद्य सक्तः ॥ १०॥

sphuradbandhujīvaprasūnāptasaṅgaṃ parispardhamāno vilāsena bhṛṅgam | mudaṃ kasya bimbādharastena raktaḥ karotyujjvalāṃ kajjalenādya saktaḥ || 10||

Your bimba-red lower lip, associated with brilliant bandhujīva blossoms and playfully rivaling a bee, is colored and smeared today with black collyrium. Whose radiant joy does it create?

अलं देवदिव्येना जाने भवन्तं सदा राधिकायामतिप्रेमवन्तम् । अलिन्दात् कुरु त्वं ममाधिप्रभातं द्रुतं गोपकन्याभुजङ्ग प्रयातम् ॥ ११॥

alaṃ devadivyenā jāne bhavantaṃ sadā rādhikāyāmatipremavantam | alindāt kuru tvaṃ mamādhiprabhātaṃ drutaṃ gopakanyābhujaṅga prayātam || 11||

Enough of your divine oaths! I know you to be forever exceedingly loving toward Rādhikā. Leave my courtyard before daybreak; go quickly into the arms of that cowherd girl.

इति प्रेमगर्भां समाकर्ण्य सर्वां तदा राधिकालीगिरं रत्नमाली । हरिस्तोषभारं स विन्दन्नपारं सदा मे महिष्ठं विधत्तामभीष्टम् ॥ १२॥

iti premagarbhāṃ samākarṇya sarvāṃ tadā rādhikālīgiraṃ ratnamālī | haristoṣabhāraṃ sa vindannapāraṃ sadā me mahiṣṭhaṃ vidhattāmabhīṣṭam || 12||
