श्रीगोवर्धनोद्धरणाय नमः । झमज्झमिति वर्षति स्तनितचक्रविक्रीडया विमुष्टरविमण्डले घनघटाभिराखण्डले । ररक्ष धरणीधरोद्धृतिपटुः कुटुम्बानि यः स दारयतु दारुणं व्रजपुरन्दरस्ते दरम् ॥ १॥

śrīgovardhanoddharaṇāya namaḥ | jhamajjhamiti varṣati stanitacakravikrīḍayā vimuṣṭaravimaṇḍale ghanaghaṭābhirākhaṇḍale | rarakṣa dharaṇīdharoddhṛtipaṭuḥ kuṭumbāni yaḥ sa dārayatu dāruṇaṃ vrajapurandaraste daram || 1||

Obeisance to the lifter of Śrī Govardhana. When rain poured down with a ‘jhamaj-jham’ roar amid circling thunder, when Indra's massed clouds stole away the orb of the sun, he skillfully lifted the mountain and protected every family. May that sovereign of Vraja tear apart your terrible fear.

Assuming the mountain's immense body, he ate the offering and satisfied the cowherd women with rows of excellent blessings. Then he circled the mountain in order and took delight in its lofty line of peaks, as though embraced by a garment.

Enraged by the destruction of his sacrifice, the lord of heaven began the devastation of the cowherd settlement on every side. Again and again the mass of clouds poured, hiding the circle of directions and roaring together with thunderbolts.

मुहुर्वृष्टिखिन्नां परित्रासाभिन्नां व्रजेशप्रधानां ततिं वल्लवानाम् । विलोक्याप्तशीतां गवालीं च भीतां कृपाभिः समुन्नं सुहृत्प्रेमनुन्नम् ॥ ६॥

Then, with the sportive ease of a lordly elephant, he casually lifted Govardhana in his left hand. Joyfully he held the immense king of mountains, which touched the clouds and became a shelter for the bewildered creatures.

स्तनद्भिः कठोरे घनैर्ध्वान्तघोरे भ्रमद्वातमाले हताशेऽत्र काले । घनस्पर्शिकूटं वहन्नन्नकूटं कथं स्यान्न कान्तः सरोजाक्षि तान्तः ॥ १२॥

stanadbhiḥ kaṭhore ghanairdhvāntaghore bhramadvātamāle hatāśe'tra kāle | ghanasparśikūṭaṃ vahannannakūṭaṃ kathaṃ syānna kāntaḥ sarojākṣi tāntaḥ || 12||

‘The clouds thunder harshly in dreadful darkness; circling winds have destroyed every hope. O lotus-eyed friend, how can our beloved not be exhausted while bearing the towering food-mountain whose peaks touch the clouds?’

न तिष्ठन्ति गोष्ठे कठोराङ्गदण्डाः कियन्तोऽत्र गोपाः समन्तात् प्रचण्डाः । शिरीषप्रसूनावलीसौकुमार्ये धृत्वा धूरियं भूरिरस्मिन् किमार्ये ॥ १३॥

na tiṣṭhanti goṣṭhe kaṭhorāṅgadaṇḍāḥ kiyanto'tra gopāḥ samantāt pracaṇḍāḥ | śirīṣaprasūnāvalīsaukumārye dhṛtvā dhūriyaṃ bhūrirasmin kimārye || 13||

‘Are there not many fierce cowherds with strong, stafflike arms standing all around in the settlement? O noble friend, why has this great burden been placed upon him, whose tenderness resembles a row of śirīṣa blossoms?’

गिरे तात गोवर्धन प्रार्थनेयं वपुः स्थूलनालीलघिष्ठं विधेयम् । भवन्तं यथा धारयन्न् एष हस्ते न धत्ते श्रमं मङ्गलात्मन्नमस्ते ॥ १४॥

gire tāta govardhana prārthaneyaṃ vapuḥ sthūlanālīlaghiṣṭhaṃ vidheyam | bhavantaṃ yathā dhārayann eṣa haste na dhatte śramaṃ maṅgalātmannamaste || 14||

Drinking the verbal honey from the creeper of Rādhā—filled with the powerful fragrance of excellent love—he becomes intoxicated like a bee, hums deeply, and receives the worship of the beautiful girl's dancing sidelong glance.

कथं नाम दध्यात् क्षुधाक्षामतुन्दः शिशुर्मे गरिष्ठं गिरीन्द्रं मुकुन्दः । तदेतस्य तुण्डे हठादर्पयारं व्रजाधीश दध्नाचितं खण्डसारम् ॥ १७॥

kathaṃ nāma dadhyāt kṣudhākṣāmatundaḥ śiśurme gariṣṭhaṃ girīndraṃ mukundaḥ | tadetasya tuṇḍe haṭhādarpayāraṃ vrajādhīśa dadhnācitaṃ khaṇḍasāram || 17||

‘How can my little Mukunda, his belly wasted by hunger, possibly hold the heaviest mountain? O lord of Vraja, quickly and firmly place plenty of crystal sugar mixed with yogurt into his mouth.’

महाभारनिष्ठे सृते ते कनिष्ठे लभे वत्स नीलाम्बरोद्दामपीडाम् । अवष्टभ्य सत्त्वं तदसमि बल त्वं ददस्वाविलम्बं स्वहस्तावलम्बम् ॥ १८॥

mahābhāraniṣṭhe sṛte te kaniṣṭhe labhe vatsa nīlāmbaroddāmapīḍām | avaṣṭabhya sattvaṃ tadasami bala tvaṃ dadasvāvilambaṃ svahastāvalambam || 18||

अमीभिः प्रभावैः कुतोऽभूदकुण्ठः शिशुधूलिकेलीपटुः क्षीरकण्ठः । बिभर्त्यद्य साप्ताब्दिको भूरिभारं गिरिं यच्चिरादेष कैलाससारम् ॥ २०॥

amībhiḥ prabhāvaiḥ kuto'bhūdakuṇṭhaḥ śiśudhūlikelīpaṭuḥ kṣīrakaṇṭhaḥ | bibhartyadya sāptābdiko bhūribhāraṃ giriṃ yaccirādeṣa kailāsasāram || 20||

‘From where has this unimpeded power come? This child, skilled in dusty infant games and with milk still at his throat, is only seven years old, yet today he has long borne the immense weight of this mountain, the very essence of Kailāsa.’

न शङ्का धरभ्रंशनेऽस्माकमस्मान् नखाग्रे सहेलं वहत्येष यस्मात् । गिरिदिक्करीन्द्राग्रहस्ते धरावद् भुजे पश्यत्यास्य स्फुरत्यद्य तावत् ॥ २१॥

na śaṅkā dharabhraṃśane'smākamasmān nakhāgre sahelaṃ vahatyeṣa yasmāt | giridikkarīndrāgrahaste dharāvad bhuje paśyatyāsya sphuratyadya tāvat || 21||

‘We have no fear that the mountain will fall, for he carries us effortlessly upon the tip of his fingernail. Look—upon his arm today the mountain appears like the earth held upon the foremost trunk of a directional elephant.’

Thus the cowherds, their wide eyes like bright stars and their joy flowing freely, stand with the king of Vraja and repeatedly gaze upon the moon of his face. Before them he passes seven nights without abandoning wakefulness.

taḍiddāmakīrṇān samīrairudīrṇān visṛṣṭāmbudhārān dhanuryaṣṭihārān | tṛṇīkṛtya ghorān sahasrāṃśucaurān durantoruśabdān kṛtāvajñamabdān || 23||

अहङ्कारपङ्कावलीलुप्तदृष्टे र्व्रजे यावदिष्टं प्रणीतोरुवृष्टेः । बलारेश्च दुर्मानितां विस्फुरन्तं निराकृत्य दुष्टालिदण्डे दुरन्तम् ॥ २४॥

Indra's vision is lost in a mire of arrogance; he sends immense rain upon Vraja as he desires. Kṛṣṇa rejects the fierce pride of the enemy of Bala, who flashes like a cruel bee deserving punishment.

‘The rows of clouds that released vast waters, carried storm winds, and were terrifying with lightning have departed. The sun now shines peacefully at the edge of the sky. O heroes, filled with joy, come outside!’

vayaṃ hanta govinda saundaryavantaṃ namaskurmahe śarmahetorbhavantam | tvayi spaṣṭaniṣṭhyūta bhūyaścidinduṃ mudā naḥ prasādīkuru premabindum || 27||

क्षुभ्यद्दम्भोलिजृम्भोत्तरलघनघटारम्भगम्भीरकर्मा निस्तम्भो जम्भवैरी गिरिधृतिचटुलाद् विक्रमाद् येन चक्रे । तन्वा निन्दन्तमिन्दीवरदलवलभीनन्ददिन्दिन्दिराभां तं गोविन्दाद्य नन्दालयशशिवदनानन्द वन्देमहि त्वाम् ॥ २८॥

kṣubhyaddambholijṛmbhottaralaghanaghaṭārambhagambhīrakarmā nistambho jambhavairī giridhṛticaṭulād vikramād yena cakre | tanvā nindantamindīvaradalavalabhīnandadindindirābhāṃ taṃ govindādya nandālayaśaśivadanānanda vandemahi tvām || 28||
