First, the festival of Nanda and related songs. All glory to Śrī Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. Sung in Bhairava rāga. Yaśodā has given birth to a noble son; the whole circle of cowherds has become exceedingly joyful. Refrain. Someone carries away many different gifts; someone else dances again and again. One person sings a sweet song; another scatters fine yogurt and fresh butter. Someone fulfills the cherished hopes of others; someone beholds the eternal form.

Āsāvarī rāga. The company of brāhmaṇas has become full of ornaments and gifts of cows. O lord of Vraja, quickly satisfy even singers like me. Your son, O King Nanda, has been born wondrously beautiful. Give the people of the cowherd settlement the desired gifts appropriate to the festival. Refrain. My heart finds joy in the instant it beholds your son; it desires this treasure that no petitioner has ever received from anyone. O dark swan who sports upon the lake of Śrī Sanātana's heart, may the loving attachment of people like me rest forever in this child of yours.

Vasanta-pañcamī, sung in Vasanta rāga. Your mass of curling hair shines with clusters of fresh buds; urged by your loving companions to bow, you help scatter powdered camphor across the forest. All glory, all glory, O beautiful son of Nanda, who performs the spring festival in Vṛndāvana, crowded with fragrance. Refrain. The gentle smile shining upon your lower lip attracts your own companions; the restless movement of your sidelong glance awakens surging transformations of love in Rādhā. Your enchanting dance bewilders the worlds and makes your jeweled necklace sway. O divine descent who sports within the hearts of your beloved people, friends, and Sanātana!

The swing festival, sung in Vasanta rāga. Thick with rows of the sweetness of playful rasa, he has made all his relatives and cowherds rejoice. Sandal paste rests upon his heart; a shining red mark adorns him; the luster of his body defeats the tamāla tree. O beautiful girl, behold Mādhava fully: his exceedingly restless body moves upon a jeweled swing rocked by the hands of his friends. Refrain. The doe-eyed women of Vraja paint him with yellow pigment; his lovely forehead shines with a beautiful tilaka. The beauty of his moonlike face, born from his smile, bewilders the net of newly youthful women. Expert in joking, adorned by hosts of flowers, this lover has a broad chest. He destroys the fear of those who bow, is dear to Sanātana, and is a royal swan upon the cowherd people's minds.

Saurāṣṭrī rāga. Rādhā, tell me the root of your illness. Why has a host of burning afflictions arisen throughout your body, imitating the terrible cry of a cuckoo? Refrain. Again and again you cast far away the soft cloth gathered upon your breast, whose radiance is favorable to the brilliance that rebukes mighty Indra's cowherd. You do not welcome even betel scented with abundant moonlike camphor. You scatter even this incomparable garland made from excellent campaka flowers, together with its crest ornament. O friend, every part of you assumes instability and quickly mocks a tuft of cotton. Even your heart, filled with eternal wonder, throbs as though bearing a thorn.

Saurāṣṭrī rāga. Looking at me crookedly, that playful one kissed the fresh lotus above. At once my limbs began to move within a circle of trembling. O radiant girl, do not ask again and again. Alas, when I see the prince of the cowherds, my mind becomes utterly bewildered. Refrain. He placed his hand upon a pomegranate vine bowed low by heavy fruit; from seeing that, even my treasure of composure, bright with virtue, set like the sun. That eternally playful one bit a tender aśoka leaf. Seeing this, alas, for a long time I forgot the functions of my own body.

Dhanāśrī rāga. Unable to discover the cause of her sudden illness, her whole family laments as they offer masses of mantras and medicines. Her reddened eyes ceaselessly weep. O Lord Hari, become compassionate: this thin-bodied friend remains alive though her heart has been struck by the sharp arrow of your sidelong glance. Refrain. Within her heart a dense host of unbroken fever turns, bringing forth a bright multitude of pearl-like drops. Her body lies motionless upon the cool ground; helpless, she now sinks. O Mādhava, you have taken the great vow of a sacrificial rite giving fearlessness to the people of the cowherd settlement. Alas, how can this girl, rich in virtues, deserve such a perilous condition?

Now the rāsa, sung in Dhanāśrī rāga. In the lovely forest interior beneath the gentle moonbeams you create playful song, then joke upon seeing the young cowherd women who swiftly gather. All glory, all glory, O beautiful son of Nanda, great dancer upon the festival stage of the sun's daughter's bank, whose auspicious rāsa play is surrounded by the divine rasa embraced by autumn. Refrain. Kissed by the cowherd women and filled with passion, you disappear when you see their jealous pride. You submit to the wealth of friendship found in Rādhā's company, she who is exalted by hosts of virtues. Intoxicated by drinking the nectar of her words, you return and gather your companions into a circle; your moving necklace in play deeply agitates the minds of the celestial women. Entering the water, you delight your own people and adorn Yamunā's bank. O eternal one, complete, concentrated consciousness of joy, your body is pure and dark blue.

Dhanāśrī rāga. I am wealthy in the vow of pure fidelity and my mind is exceedingly spotless. Why do you spread this improper joke, abandoned by the virtuous? Mādhava, release this cloth of mine; I shall quickly go home. Refrain. Had I known that you were hiding your body so secretly upon the bank, how could I have come so far into the sun's daughter's waters at evening? I bow to you; abandon this contrary conduct. Preserve the eternal, proper path cherished by the righteous.

The sound of Gokula's auspicious flute roars out the command of King Love that I must go to the forest. Refrain. This moon has risen from the brilliance of Mādhava's toenail. Do not repeatedly bring forth fear of our elders; desire has made me run. Look—the whole line of cowherd women approaches the bank of the sun's daughter to serve him here, the eternal one dressed as the supreme forest lover.

Karṇāṭa rāga. Your body shines, reproaching the blue lotus, and is golden with the abundance of kuṅkuma from Rādhā's breasts. O beautiful, captivating one crowned with moonlike peacock feathers, you are the cage for the parrot of Candrāvalī's mind. All glory, all glory to you, adorned with a guñjā garland, expert in biting the bimba-red lower lips of the finest circle of cowherd women, made unrestrained by love. Refrain. The sound of your flute is supremely expert at making the grass fall from the mouths of the female deer. Your naturally sweet smile intoxicates; the corners of the Siddha women's eyes worship you. Friend, worship the prince of the cowherds, who desires the pleasure of your company. Refrain. He wears a lovely necklace of fresh guñjā fruits, surrounded by bees that sport among his garlands. This cowherd, eternally playful here, naturally reveals spotless joking. Mallāra rāga. He bears the sprout of the nectar of laughter that removes the fever of young women's eyes. A gentle breeze moves the peacock feathers and makes his generous, playful crown shine. Beautiful girl, look—the forest-garlanded one approaches as the day reaches its close, rich in ever-new grace. Refrain. Dust raised by the cows' hooves covers him; a garland of blossoming lotuses rests upon him; his lovely form resembles a circle of newly opened shining blue lotuses. The waves from the corners of his eyes create your love here through the sound of his sweet flute. His charming, eternal body gives delight, and he is joined by his circle of friends.

Now the classifications of heroines. The heroine who goes to meet her lover, the one dressed and waiting for him, the one distressed by his delay, the one deceived, the offended heroine, the one separated after a quarrel, the woman whose lover is abroad, and the woman who controls her beloved—these are the eight kinds of heroine proclaimed in the treatises on rasa. First, the woman who goes to her lover: intensely eager in heart from passion and from Love himself, she goes personally to meet her beloved and is called an abhisārikā. Dhanāśrī rāga. Your pearl necklace moves upon your breasts and the clustered moonbeams become dense in your smile. O beautiful girl dressed in white, go to meet Hari; this full-moon night has become very deep. Now the woman who controls her beloved. She whose lover, drawn by the qualities of her love, never leaves her side, and who remains absorbed in varied preparations, is the svādhīna-bhartṛkā. Mallāra rāga. O Śauri, make a row of leaf designs here upon my golden breast using drops of musk. O beautiful dark one, arrange many distinctive, radiant ornaments upon my body. Refrain. O peacock-plumed one, place an excellent feather-like ornament within the binding of my hair. Here, O eternal artist, hang a fine pair of lavaṅga blossoms at my two ears.

Vasanta rāga. Why does he make waves with his eyes? A bed of night-lotuses does not worship the sun. Friend, restrain Mādhava as Love rises within him, so that he does not touch my body. Refrain. A clove blossom falls from my trembling hand, yet even so you do not abandon your joking. I shall not forsake the unbroken, eternal law I have joined within my heart.

Bhairava rāga. Your limbs are richly anointed with saffron and camphor and your mass of curling hair is adorned with peacock feathers. All glory, all glory, O prince of the cowherds, emerald necklace upon Rādhā's breast. Refrain. The high notes of your flute steal Rādhā's composure; the corner of your eye creates transformations of Love. You delight Rādhā's companions with rasa and arrange pastimes within Sanātana's heart.

Karṇāṭa rāga, Ekatālī rhythm. O beautiful girl, you are a virtuous young woman—then tell us, how have you become the thief of the heart-jewel belonging to the son of the sovereign cowherd? Do not conceal another's treasure now; you are known as the guardian of your family. O Lalitā's friend, show compassion—the forest-garlanded one is wasting away upon the floor of a cave. O jewel among women, return that lovely jewel to its support, and through your great compassion let Hari's whole company of attendants become free from distress. This pair of messengers bows to you, their gathered hair fallen loose as they roll upon the ground. O slender girl, follow your eternal affection; do not enlarge this deceit.

Mallāra rāga, Ekatālī rhythm. Rādhā, make your heart favorable. The very root of Gokula's life is splitting apart, his heart struck by the arrow of your sidelong glance. Refrain. His flute, a swan upon the lotus of his right hand and practiced in the fifth musical note, now observes a sage's vow of silence, as though from the weight of lovelessness. His vast forest garland, its fragrance drawing multitudes of wandering bees, has fallen from his neck and withers in the forest. O merciless girl, even his body has grown thin and abandoned play. He who eternally delights the heart collapses in the cave-home.

Vasanta rāga. Today in spring the enemy of Madhu plays with Gokula's young women at the fragrant horizon bright with flowers. Refrain. His moonlike face celebrates as Rādhā kisses him, filled with love; here he wears a fresh campaka garland and holds Candrāvalī's charming fingers. Fresh moon-streaks are painted upon Viśākhā's body; then he joins Lalitā, rests an arm upon Śyāmalā, and raises Padmā into playful delight. He carries the abundance of red powder thrown by Śaivyā, who leans upon Bhadrā. Look—this is Sanātana's divine form, creating the beauty of dense Vṛndāvana.

Vasanta rāga. O Rādhā, worship the festival-stage of Vṛndāvana, where the king of seasons has offered the delight of celebration. Refrain. Trained in dance by the Malaya breeze, rows of vines dance with shining laughter. The company of cuckoos plays the drum while the family of trees watches, their limbs covered in sprouts. A multitude of bees sings with wondrous character, like my flute in Sanātana's eternal play.

Vasanta rāga. Here in sweet spring, upon Vṛndāvana's bank, playful Hari sports with Rādhikā, filled with waves of joy. Refrain. Rādhā uses a spraying device to scatter kuṅkuma paste upon the enemy of Agha, while her beloved fearlessly drenches her with streams of musk liquid. This youthful couple casts fresh, deep-red scented powder at one another, repeatedly crying, ‘Victory! I have won!’ as they arrange immense play. Subala beats loud hand-claps and declares, ‘The forest-garlanded one has won!’ Lalitā replies, ‘Look—my friend has defeated Sanātana's beloved!’

Dhanāśrī rāga. Friend, Rādhā is expert in water play; she sports in her own lake with the enemy of Madhu. Refrain. He creates a quarrel by plundering the cloth from her breasts and appoints a lotus to the rank of weapon. He insists upon tight embraces and kisses and is severe in the act of sprinkling cold water. In a sudden sign of her beloved's defeat, his eternal brilliance slackens beneath the burden of pleasure. Another song in Dhanāśrī rāga. Rādhā, heighten the sport within the water of your own lake, and splash the peacock-plumed crown that has accepted defeat. Refrain. Look—his shining crest, fashioned from blooming flowers, is hidden along his dense dark hair by its fears. The pictured pathways painted with mineral pigments dissolve into the water; his garland too becomes very loose and loses its bees. Your cheek, proud of appearing as a reflection, has fiercely appropriated even the rays of Śrī Sanātana's finest jewel.
