Now the account beginning with the festival of Śrī Nanda. His circle of majesty illuminates his dwelling in Vraja; the sweetness of his moonlike face delights his parents' eyes. Learned brāhmaṇas expert in revelation perform his birth rites; his cloudlike infant body satisfies his family, like cātaka birds. His father joyfully gives many kinds of gifts, while all the cowherds bring presents. His birth adorns every man and woman; the people rejoice as the night's stores of milk and yogurt are poured out. The splendid courtyard is thickly covered with abundant yogurt; women sway and openly dance, overcome by joy. All the cowherds shine, gratified by his father; in Vraja he is the fresh shoot of the full opulence of lotus-born Lakṣmī. Clever, deceitful Pūtanā casts a cruel glance upon him; he has vowed to destroy the hosts of demons who terrify Vraja. He lies beside the breast of Bakāsura's elder sister and drinks the breast milk mingled with her life. He brings down the host of trees that formed her gigantic body and destroys the many demonic conditions of that enemy of children. The skillful cowherd women arrange every protection for him; through affection he bears spotless auspicious marks made from cow-dust and dung. He is the fresh moon and sandal paste of every cowherd woman's heart. O restless mind, worship the son of Vraja's king. This meter is called Gucchaka. Victorious is the abundant honey of devotion to your lotus feet, O son of Nanda; before even a particle of its sweetness, the happiness of liberation becomes no more than an empty shell.

Now the slaying of the cart demon. O infant surrounded by the great bustle of the rising-day festival, resting beneath the cart! You cry from thirst for breast milk, then amuse yourself by overturning the cart with your restless foot. The cowherds marvel at this feat so difficult to perform, while the children surrounding you describe what you did. Your frightened parents come near, and mantra-knowing brāhmaṇas perform rites of pacification. Now the slaying of Tṛṇāvarta. Your suddenly unbearable weight troubles your mother, for you have resolved at once to restrain the demon. The demon carries you away for a moment; you seize his throat and crush your foe. Your distraught mother grieves deeply, and the lamenting cowherd women search everywhere. You bring immense joy to your mother and relatives—bring joy also to me, O blessing of Gokula. Now the name-giving rite. Your fresh infant play crosses the boundaries of age, and Garga reveals the nectar of your names. Your crawling adorns Nanda's home, and its sweetness satisfies Gokula's hearts. You tug the tails of the moving calves and delight the women until they forget their household tasks. Curious, you release the calves at the wrong time, your restless eyes wary that your theft has been noticed. When scolded you create a grand display of laughter; your clever speech restrains those who would seize you. You sit splendidly atop the mortar, pierce the slings, and reach the excellent pots. You delight the monkeys with milk products and arrange the breaking of fresh yogurt jars. Your eyes show fear when your mother sees you. All glory, all glory to you, O sun that opens the lotus of Gokula. Now the pastime of eating earth. Rāma exposes your eating of dirt, and you display signs of fear before your mother. Then you show the whole moving and unmoving universe within your open mouth. O son of the cowherd sovereign, fill me with joy. This meter is called Koraka. Now the theft of yogurt. ‘Friend Karālikā, the dark child has entered the house! Fasten the little door securely, for I will catch this bold thief of yogurt.’ When the outspoken woman loudly announces this, Hari sees the great danger and becomes as slender as darkness itself. May he protect you.

He grasps the churning rod and his mother kisses his cheeks. He drinks the milk of the sun-colored cow and charms the family with his childish speech. Unsatisfied by his mother's milk, he proudly breaks the vessel. He steals freshly churned butter and arouses his mother's anger. His mother chases him, though even hosts of sages cannot attain his state. Seeing Yaśodā's stick, he abandons the sport of running. The fragrance of fresh butter clings to him as she binds him to the mortar. He sees the roots of the arjuna trees and acts in harmony with the words of the divine sage. He breaks the twin arjunas and delights in the two yakṣas' praises; having made those yakṣas his devotees, O Mādhava, protect me also. The cowherds gaze in amazement; he is jubilant, his little face beautifully smiling. Nanda releases him from his bonds. All glory, all glory to the root of every blessing.

The moon of Vraja delights Upananda's inner mind and applauds the most enchanting interior of Vṛndāvana. His mother carries him close against her body, while doe-eyed women joyfully sing behind him. Blossoming, expansive Vṛndāvana offers him its delight; he keeps company with the bank of the mountain-born daughter of the sun. He takes immense pleasure upon the slopes of the great hill and is the jewel-treasury of all his friends' play. On nearby ground he eagerly tends the calves, delighting his friends with the weight of his exuberant games. His moving glance enters the restless moon reflected in the waves, and he creates ever-new melodies with the excellent sound of his flute. Soft necklaces gleaming like tiger claws encircle his neck; curious little bells chime upon the shore of his waist. A gathered crown of peacock feathers forms his splendid crest, and most lovely strands of guñjā berries embrace him. Together with his friends he assumes the guise of a bull. This Hari is the fierce enemy of the calf demon and the elephant-like demon; he playfully enters Bakāsura's massive beak and splits apart that mountain peak of a body. His overjoyed friends stroke him with their arms, and the gods shower him with excellent flowers. May the forest-garlanded one, wearing a garland of blooming blossoms and guarding his own herd of calves, bestow satisfaction upon me today.

He desires to eat in the forest and fills it with a flood of high calls. Surrounded by a lovely circle of calf-tending boys awakened by the horn, he receives a flood of joy and sends the calves ahead. His time is carried away in astonishing and abundant games with his friends. Then they see the creature whose body blocks the forest, whose face is adorned by darkness, whose eyes blaze like a forest fire, whose breath releases a putrid smell, whose newly spread bulk resembles a mass of clouds—the demon in serpent form. Deeply astonished, the circle of calf-tenders enters its belly and falls into distress. Kṛṣṇa swiftly enters after them, drives away the danger to his devotees, expands his body to block the demon's breath, and crushes the serpent-born foe. By his glance he restores to life the children, and with them he reaches the bank of a fine lake, eager to eat. As the many splendid rows of boys begin their meal, he shines at their center like the whorl of a lotus, assigning the dignity of elephant calves to those around him. Facing everyone, he raises his smiling face, skillfully enjoying the sacrificial foods the boys offer while the gods headed by Indra watch the creation of his play. As the calf-tending children eat, the herd of calves goes far away. He finds a grove and goes to gather them, but lotus-born Brahmā, eager to test him, carries off the calves and the circle of boys. Understanding this with cloud-dark intelligence and casting forth a moon-bright laugh, Kṛṣṇa at once places his own forms into the exact shapes of every calf and boy. He is a treasury of jewel-like conduct that delights all their mothers, and for a year he shines here, increasing their thirst of love. Lotus-born Brahmā beholds the truth and becomes utterly astonished upon seeing his wondrous, supremely pure divine forms. Accepting the conduct of Gokula and receiving Brahmā's praise of his majesty, Kṛṣṇa brings back his own calves and cowherd boys. O lotus-eyed Lord, jasmine-toothed one, I take shelter of you: great fortune of Nanda's settlement, one whose charming curls end in beauty; bee greedy for the fragrance of the aśoka-flower cluster; yellow play-lotus; one whose circle of calves is obedient; one whose arms shine with bracelets and who gives delight to the company of friends; one whose feet shine with anklets and who wears lovely ornaments; guardian of charming young calves, adorned with mineral pigments; beloved of the cowherd lineage and difficult for hosts of yogīs to attain; one with a campaka at his ear and one who shows compassion to the distressed. O protector, obeisance to you always, whose blazing glories are sung. O supreme remainder and fulfillment of all persons, give me—please give me—even the slightest trace of devotion. This is the Aśoka-puṣpa-mañjarī meter. Even four-faced Brahmā was unable to describe your sweetness. Though I have incurred the laughter of the virtuous by trying to reveal it today, O Lord, this undertaking will nevertheless not be fruitless, for even a semblance of worshiping you is renowned as the destroyer of every misfortune.

All glory to you, skillful guardian of hundreds of thousands of cows, following them into the lovely depths of the forest. You find delight and shower down play, singing with Baladeva beneath dense, cool trees. O king of cowherd boys, you imitate the calls and movements of birds, delight your friends, and display your charming limbs in wrestling contests, checking powerful arms with your own. Sometimes you carry your friend upon your strong back; sometimes, with your whole band of friends, you rest beneath royal trees beside Yamunā. Bhadrasena and the others fashion a new flower bed resembling a sheet of milk foam. You sleep in its excellent center, guarded by your dear companions, bound by Vṛṣabhānu's daughter's tender affection. Delighted by sweet song, massaged by Subala, your lotus feet give Padma joy while the canopy of branches fans you. The boys long for ripe tāla fruits and address you with sweet words; your starry face is embraced by laughter and you assume a heroic bearing. Entering the deep, lofty Tāla forest with Rāma, you find the fullness of your own power. Balarāma shakes the high crowns of the palmyras and makes all the fruit fall, bringing delight. Angered by the sound, the wicked ass-shaped Dhenuka attacks; Rāma, protector from enemies, creates a garland of joy by killing him. O death of the horse demon, fire to the circle of asses, and delight of your own lineage! Dhenuka and the rest are slain, the gods praise you, and the smashing of the palmyra kings creates jubilation. O splitter of enemy hosts, be wholly gracious to me.

You see the lake of the sun's daughter made a haunt of serpents, its lotuses burned by poisonous fire, and the moving creature there locked in ruinous conflict with Garuḍa. Joyfully and proudly climbing a kadamba on the bank, you leap into the water of the fierce serpent and scatter it widely, though it blazes with venomous flame. A towering mass of water rises hundreds of bow-lengths. Kāliya, who scorches the world, roars and surrounds you with terrible gazes and cruel hoods reddened by jewel-light, then angrily coils around you as you assume the conduct of a helpless child. Seeing this marvel, everyone rushes there in piercing grief—their garments slipping from their bodies, crying in great anguish. Strengthened by Baladeva's essential counsel, they refrain from entering the lake, though desire repeatedly returns and pain overwhelms them: wives, elders, children, all the cowherds and every keeper of cows. They behold your smiling face as you insult the serpent, cast off the obstruction of his coils, and cleanse your friends of anxiety. Displaying the majestic play of the king of birds and a fearsome, shining valor, you cast down the elephant-like serpent with its jeweled hood-cage. Leaping playfully, you mount the arena of his hoods and perform a divine dance that inaugurates a festival. Multitudes of gods in the sky—headed by lotus-born Brahmā and trident-bearing Śiva—rejoice at the crushing of the villain, shower flowers, and praise this wondrous child. O friend, look now upon your son dancing visibly before you in perfect rasa: youthful and restless, the corners of his eyes whirling; wearing a beautiful necklace; breaking the serpent's pride; arranging his dancing hands; playfully tossing his head; a bud of laughter opening; the cord at his neck swaying. Hearing the women call in delight, ‘O sovereign lady of Vraja, behold him with your blessed eyes!’ Yaśodā looks upon you and finds joy. Fierce in crushing the wicked and crowned with Love's beauty, you leap again and again upon the hoods. Praised by the serpent wives, your heart becomes exceedingly generous and you grant safety to the serpent king. At once they worship you and anoint you with priceless fragrances. With lotus earrings fastened at your ears, you are no terror to the serpent race. You delight your relatives and bow at your elders' feet, while your mother kisses you without delay in overwhelming joy. All glory, O Lord, treasury of mercy and ocean of jewel-like pastimes. O eternal one who destroys the entire suffering of those who bow, be gracious to me.

Surrounded by rows of friends and singing flute music that steals the ear, you follow the paths of the cows wearing excellent yellow cloth. Your strong, radiant arms are full; a peacock feather shines upon your head; your forehead resembles a crescent moon and the broad doorway of your heart is open. Though the fierce sun's heat spreads through the bright month, Vṛndāvana carries the full wealth of spring honey and is free from the forest fire's distress. Its grass enchants the cows; cuckoos sound the fifth note; peacocks utter the tonic; fragrance overflows everywhere; lovely śirīṣa blossoms open and jasmine is plainly fragrant. You enter Vṛndāvana in great joy with Baladeva, sometimes staging contests of arms and sometimes seeking rest. You play with fresh tumba fruits here, very tender kumbha fruits there, elsewhere ripe guñjā berries, and clusters of bilva and āmalaka. Foremost master of wondrous play, you form pairs for contests within a great reservoir of delight, creating intense attachment and dividing the friends into sides. Beneath the Bhāṇḍīra tree, with a favorable cool breeze, the king of demons enters disguised as a cowherd. Though you know him, you playfully accept him, O chastiser of villains. You skillfully arrange that Baladeva's side wins, desiring Śrīdāma's happiness, and let Rāma be carried by the enemy of the gods. The wielder of the plow destroys the vast body of Pralamba, whose form was fashioned by illusion; the gods praise the pastime and your nature delights your friends. The cows meanwhile wander far away with quick steps. Fearing the loss of their wealth, you and the cowherds search together and find every white cow in a vast wilderness made terrible by thick muñja grass, reaching a summit of happiness. You swallow the dreadful forest fire and openly reveal your shining majesty. O reveler at Bhāṇḍīra who creates a festival for those who bow, ocean of rasa for the people of Gokula and friend of the unfortunate—all glory, all glory to you.

In the fullness of the cloud season you delight in the abundant rains, making shelter within the hollows of trees. Kadamba and kakubha blossoms surround you, and you find pleasure in the dense forest. You grant the cherished blessings of the assembly of devotees. Then comes autumn, carrying captivating majesty, ornamenting the woods and filling them with many birds in a divine arrangement. Your dress rivals that of the finest dancer; your charming hair is studded with moonlike peacock feathers. Your form churns away the composure of the young cowherd women, and your enacted tales do the same. The fruit of all eyes is to behold your face, its lovely lower lip curved around the flute. The flute bears the full wealth of all piety; its nectar stains your lip. At the flute's sweet sound, masses of peacocks dance and clouds gather to serve you. Herds of cows, released from their tethers, become intensely eager in heart. The graceful movements of your resplendent body enchant the women of the gods. Your smooth feet, joined with saffron, delight the young forest women. Your lotus face gives pleasure to the spotless eyes of lovely does. The mountain devoted to servitude arranges worship, while lines of animals and birds surround you. O Lord Varuṇa, protect a person like me; O sovereign, your worship is hard to attain.

Seeing the cowherd girls—attracted by the rising glory of his qualities, beautified by beginning their vow to the daughter of the mountain, and bathing in the purifying forest by the sun's daughter—he swiftly arrives, steals their clothes, and takes shelter in a kadamba tree, the foremost of playful lovers. He immediately observes the girls of the settlement, their curling locks made more beautiful by the vines of their frowning brows. His face shines with a smile and blossoming mālatī flowers form his earrings. Shivering violently from the cold, loving yet angry and deeply embarrassed, the groups of girls plead for their clothes in agitation, their faces displaying plaintive speech, conciliation, and strategic distinctions. He lays the garments across his broad shoulders, his lovely cloth gleaming with his bright teeth. Through emphatic demands and joking conversation honored by his friends, he quickly forces the young women of Gokula to come before the tree on the bank. Filled with amused innocence, giver of playful delight and joy to every cowherd woman, he watches the girls approach with bowed heads, their raised hands plainly serving as garments. Clever Kṛṣṇa celebrates their obedience to his instruction. Explaining that their naked bathing has broken the vow's rule, the charming-eyed one makes them forcibly place a sweet añjali upon their heads to complete it for him, the embodiment of their welfare and the remover of his beloveds' mental pain. Appeased by the circle of girls, who bow quickly in love-filled honor, he delights them with abundant happiness and swiftly returns the collection of garments. He fulfills the young girls' heart-desire and enchants every beautiful woman with love. He is the wish-fulfilling tree for those who bow, the honey of the jasmine-like lovely cowherd women. O sovereign of all, abode of Indirā, great Indra of Vraja, O God, protect me.

Accompanied by Dhenuka's enemy, who delights his relatives through play, you are encircled on every side by cowherds, tender leaves meeting your ears. Beloved of the chief cowherd women, you desire the embrace of the forest. You honor Vṛndāvana forest and look upon the smiling faces of the cowherds. Praising the wealth of the trees and extolling their generosity as a pretext, you give peace. Your friends are tormented by great hunger and approach you with loving prayers. You send them to a nearby sacrifice, thus exposing the priests' cruelty. When the brāhmaṇas disregard them, you transfer understanding to your beloveds. The wives cross the three barriers that guard propriety, filling their vessels with fried breads. With true devotion they place fine dishes, anointed with the wealth of affection; jeweled bowls carry milk, and they boldly approach the forest. Their vessels hold sweet porridge and their excited cries rise high. Overwhelmed by reverence, the circle of brāhmaṇa women beholds you: dressed in a brilliant golden cloth whose radiance rivals refined gold, your world-protecting right hand rests upon a friend's shoulder. A dancer's ornaments shine upon you and the moving girdle bells chime. Your luster reproaches the blue lotus; your broad chest is beautiful and full; flower-cluster earrings sway. The assembly of brāhmaṇa women praises you. ‘O beautiful Kṛṣṇa, driven swiftly by sharp longing we have come from afar. Protect us, for you are now close to our hearts, O sun!’ Before you, the earth-goddess-like women express their plaintive appeal and reveal their agitation. You grant every desire, then send the stainless brāhmaṇa women back. Softer than a tender leaf, you delight Indirā through your virtues. You eat the rice while feeding your attendants. Moving like an intoxicated elephant and naturally delighting your servants, may you forever begin your varied sports and play abundantly in Gokula. O Govinda, always protect me, bold though I am, from the assault of terrible calamity.

You destroy the sacrifice to Vraja's Indra through reasoned speech and expand the festival of worshiping the brāhmaṇas, cows, and great mountain. You teach the purpose of gaining the wealth of mountain worship, with incomparable sacrificial posts, heaps of rice, yogurt, and sweets. All the cattle are decorated with flowers, pigments, and sandalwood; groups of cowherds clean the mountain's plateaus and caves. The tremendous cries of the mountain festival summon every relative, and abundant excitement fills the sequence of circumambulation and worship. Assuming an excellent form equal to the mountain, you manifest and consume the offered rice; as a source of blessing, you delight the splendid company of Vraja's cowherds. Enraged Indra floods the land with rain and encircles distressed Gokula, but you perform an astonishing act that gives joy to your relatives crowded in terror: the peerless mountain rests like a lotus upon your left hand. The budding splendor of your play scatters proud Indra's arrogance. Your friends, overwhelmed by the weight of dwelling in the mountain caves, bathe in the wondrous ocean of affection that arises. They behold your shining face and their hearts rejoice; the rich moonlight of your smile whitens the faces of the passionate young women. Your frightened yet delighted mother, marked by wonder, caresses you with her hand; Rādhā too gazes upon you from the corners of her charming, restless eyes. You shield everyone from the lightning and the fierce, wind-maddened mass of clouds; you chew apart the amassed pride of Śakra, blinded by prosperity. For seven days the matchless mountain lies upon the bed of your hand. When Indra is humbled and withdraws the clouds, you find satisfaction at the sight. With a seal of charming speech you lead your circle of relatives out; your excited friends sing of your auspicious valor. You place the excellent mountain back upon its own shining site, eternally steadfast in the vow to protect Vraja's hosts of relatives. You witness the fresh delight blooming in the lord and lady of the cowherds; the cowherd women protect you with kuṅkuma, unbroken rice, leaves, and blessings. Upon the mountain plateau where the sun had been hidden, a fine cloth serves as your seat. Terrified and ashamed, Indra bows to the dust of your lotus feet; the fear of him vanishes when your smiling face appears before him. His heart becomes absorbed in describing your captivating beauty and speech. Assuming the office that gives welfare to the cows and Indra, you become filled with joy; Tumburu's melodies hang in the sky as worshipful song. Surabhi, fragrant with innocent sweetness, bathes you in streams of milk. The whole circle is freed from burning distress. O Mādhava, playful as an intoxicated cuckoo, O Puruṣottama, may the bee of my restless intelligence forever face toward you.

The noose-bearing god praises your gathered pastimes; his weapon becomes your servant through the nectar of his pure, brilliant speech. You wipe away the fatigue of his offense and produce delight in him. Nanda offers you a devotional gaze and attains an incomparable moment of heart. Returning home with your father, you vow to remove your mother's distress. Nanda's face, his mind filled with every wonder he has seen, recounts the transcendent abundance of your deeds. The cowherds suspect that you are the Lord of all and become eager. Understanding the indication in their hearts, you resolve to fulfill it. Placing them in a divine lake, you show the cow-milkers the supreme, transcendent realm of pure spiritual being and remove their confusion. You kindle the assembly of relatives and raise the banner of your fame. O Dāmodara, source of joy for the cowherd women, protect me.

The sight of the autumn moon increases his flood of loving intoxication. He is the sun opening the heart-lotuses of the beloved people who worship him. His sweet song utterly enchants the circle of young cowherd women; abandoning every duty, the distraught young women surround him. The row of his teeth covets their spotless lotus eyes, while he mischievously constructs a net of harsh joking words. Hearing them, the timid women entreat him with tearful eyes. He then removes his beloveds' distress and surrounds them with an abundance of playful delight. His mass of pure dark radiance sweeps away millions of Loves; skilled in arranging the meeting of his red lower lip with the women's lips, he hides his own body from the gaze of their youthful pride. The serpent of jealous dignity rises among his beloved devotees. The afflicted women search everywhere but do not see him, questioning the many flowering vines and trees. Reaching a sandy bank fragrant with lotuses, they imitate his pastimes. Forever enjoying immeasurable delight with Rādhikā, he adorns his beloved's body with blooming, beautiful forest flowers, while his sidelong glance becomes a bee at her lotus face. Increasing her intense love, he conceals himself even from her; those dear women whose shelter is love become deeply distressed. Seeing Rādhā helpless, all the young women gather around her. Overcome by the various paths of their abundant weeping and lamentation, he then enters the pathway of the distraught cowherd daughters' eyes—his handsome smile shining, yellow cloth marked by abundant kuṅkuma. He sits among the greatly delighted women and, with charming words that dispel the heart's affliction, creates satisfaction. Their hearts blossom with amassed joy and the young women begin the rāsa. His jasmine teeth and lovely face are beautified by a gentle smile. Dwelling between every pair of women, his desirable splendor increases; he resembles a row of campaka blossoms encircled by graceful bees. Through his varied forms each woman knows him at her own side and is delighted. His art of dance increases the joy of the gods headed by Śaṅkara; the moon's circle is enchanted and celestial sages and their wives fall under his sway. The sounds of bells and anklets extend everyone's delight. His sweet face perfumes the entire sky with fragrance; the young women accompany his greatly honored song with dance. His lovely singing steals the composure of all creation. The cowherd women, filled with passion and unable to restrain themselves, answer him. The circles of bracelets whirl in dance; bees hum softly in the battle of flowers. In that secluded festival of rāsa his supreme beauty is fully assembled. The pure luster of his pearl-like smile creates longing in the young women. He wipes the tender cheeks of those tired by love; his arms are expert in the affectionate contest of desire. Fresh young limbs bear graceful nail marks from overwhelming play, their beauty awakening desire even in Love's own mind. The women, their minds agitated by cold-water sport, splash him; he shines all the more with the beautiful flashes that suddenly arise. The gods shower him with wondrous flowers. The cowherd daughters gaze upon him, simple and restless in love. He sports splendidly in the water like the lord of elephants, the lotus of his restless hand tugging at the young women's garments. He delights in grove-homes resembling jeweled palaces, his body displaying the marks of loving young passion. O son of Nanda, holder of wise counsel, beautiful and victorious hero, dancer upon Yamunā's bank and steadfast arranger of rāsa: place within me even a trace of worship for your feet, which conquer misfortune and sin. O sovereign of all with reddish eyes, cast a compassionate glance upon me.

I take shelter of you, who purify the ground within Ambikā's grove where the trees shine and who bathe in the water of lotus-born Brahmā's daughter, delighting the eyes. Your brilliant beauty resembles a rain cloud, while your splendid garment shines like gold. When the serpent seizes the king of the cowherds, you bring your foot upon it; by your desired sight you free Sudarśana from the agony of his terrible curse. You release your beloved Nanda and lift all grief from the cowherds. Your budding brilliant radiance disperses blackness. Returning at the beginning of a shining night and eager to join your elder brother, you agitate the wagtail-like eyes of all the incomparable cowherd beauties. Your wondrous, stainless song enchants their entire company. Then Śaṅkhacūḍa, an evil lord of yakṣas, carries away the women. You remove the young women's fear, crush the fierce-bodied yakṣa, and increase their delight. You obtain the yakṣa's jewel and please your elder brother. O Mādhava, whose lotus feet are worshiped by the rulers of the worlds and who produces a festival in Gokula, I bow to you. O abode of grace and Lord of the universe, protect me in my fallen state.

During the day the young women, pained by separation, speak of you. Your broad left arm forms a lofty resting place; a shining ornament rests at your ear and the flute is held at your face. You steal the minds of all the women of the heavenly cities with supremely sweet song, surrounded by herds of animals. You are the hero who stops the full flow of river waters. The gods headed by lotus-born Brahmā and Bharga cannot fathom the rasa of your delicate song even in thought. Your glance intoxicates and steals the sorrow of those who bow; the breeze of happiness arises after the heart has been stolen. The gods headed by Giriśa serve your feet. Your eyes roll from loving intoxication and you are filled with rasa. Your gait defeats the elephant; saffron passion colors you. Your sweet speech removes the young women's daytime torment. O restless one in a dancer's dress, O Lord of Mathurā, show mercy.

The bull demon wounds the cowherd community, and you bring them joy. Clapping your own hand, you enrage the wicked bull. Your strong arm rests atop your dearest one's shoulder as you break the pride of the demon whose immense face afflicts the world. With dense strength you force back the swiftly charging bull and delight all the gods gathered in the sky. Through a mere fraction of your arm's glory you split the bull's horn, and by striking him with it you tear apart the bee-like body of Diti's son. Then you see the terrible horse demon approaching you; the loving young women grieve tenderly. Disregarding the thunderous pounding of the horse's heavy hooves, you crush his vast pride through your own graceful movement. You hurl the demon's body ten thousand bow-lengths away, then seize and tightly restrain his broad mouth with your arm. Joining your serpentlike arm against the horse's teeth, you cause them to fall; expanding that arm, you split the horse demon's body. With effortless grace you destroy Keśī, who had made the world helpless. You enter the assembly of cowherd beauties, lively with loving rasa. Your faint smile delights wise Nārada in his praise, and you bestow abundant happiness upon Giriśa and all the gods. Then, while you play in the forest with your quick-minded friends, the dull-witted demon Vyoma arrives and steals them away. Knowing that the demon has taken the herd of your companions, you split apart Maya's son, who turns the world toward fear. O my heart, worship with compassion the lotus-eyed one, whose stainless lotus feet free fear from anyone who bows even once.

The lofty arena becomes a field of sport for him, while the rows of lotuslike eyes belonging to Mathurā's citizens become his delighted playground. His figure shines in yellow silk, and the festival that animates all the people whirls around him. With inexhaustible leonine courage and unimpeded valor, he relentlessly crushes the massive, tusked elephant. Having brought the lofty elephant to its end and created vast gatherings of joy upon the earth, he wears armor made from the waves of shining drops of its ichor and fashions satisfaction for those who bow. His youthfulness opens into increasing breadth; his compassion destroys the mass of darkness within. The rows of people ahead behold him after he pierces the enemy's vital points, and find unrestrained happiness. His mighty stafflike arms are filled with pride; even the assembled Gandharvas and Siddhas marvel. A huge tusk shines upon his broad shoulder, and drops of perspiration encircle his cheeks. His limbs gleam like rows of sapphires, and he is joined by cowherd Balarāma, the enemy of Pralamba. Through his entrance into the arena in the guise of a heroic champion, the ranks of wrestlers are swiftly shaken. The bud of his gentle smile begins to reproach rows of jasmine. His lotus feet delight the gods. The moving brilliance of his fingernails forms a circular horizon, while a constellation gleams across the plain of his chest. The bow of his brows expands like flowering vines; he fulfills Love's unprecedented pride. Women repeatedly behold his sweetness, and the noble cowherd women long for him. Playing in the arena, he destroys the deepest grief and calamity of those who bow and creates joy for the gods headed by Indra. With the diversion of his eyes he protects the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas. He breaks the severe vows of noble, chaste women and deeply shatters the dissatisfaction of the wrestlers' wives. When the king of the earth watches him approach, terror arises and bewilders even the child before him. Kṛṣṇa is a spike in the heart of Padmāvatī's son and wholeheartedly desires the sport of battle with his arms. The young Lord's combat with the immensely powerful and terrifying wrestler Cāṇūra unfolds. His name flashes upon the mouths of rows of sages; a garland moves across his broad chest; he is the home of newly rising rain clouds and the station that crosses beyond every gathering of heroes. Standing upon the lovely, high platforms, the Bhojas and Daśārhas perceive distinctive devotional emotions toward the Lord, whose rising foot-radiance disperses the five arrows and whose beauty awakens Love's pride. O lion against the elephant of the foremost wrestler Cāṇūra, O glorious Lord and Indra among the cowherd women, protect me. Your left hand whirls and strikes Muṣṭika; the splendor of your costume bears the signs of a cowherd. You scatter the mass of insolent evil wrestlers, while the stems of your feet shine in fearless dance. The beauty of your graceful bodily gestures attracts virtuous women, who drink the flower wine of your body's fragrance. You are the single vessel from which the cowherd women's eyes drink, your whole body decorated by garlands of flowers. O God, plunderer of the bondage and pain of Devakī and Vasudeva, the bell of your fame resounds through the circle of directions. You grant the flourishing seven-limbed kingdom to your devotee Ugrasena. Protect me, your limbs anointed with the fragrant cosmetic from Kubjā's body.
