Mohan Madan has three curves!' He enchanted The minds of the munis. Mohan Gopāla is full of virtues. He is the manifestation Of Supreme Bliss for crowds of sages. On his head is a crown— In his ear a jewel ring. His chest is adorned with a forest garland. His dark body is handsome in its yellow garment. The lovely belt of tiny bells At his waist is sweet. His gem-like nails are suns. His feet are lotuses. He is Mohan Madan, the one with three curves. Mohan plays His flute— The very sound Calls the women. Hearing the flute’s call. The Braj women came Home and husband and relatives forgotten. The darsan Of charming Madan Gopāla Extinguished the fever of Kamadeva. His face filled with joy —giving a sidelong glance— He sings with a beautiful, sweet sound. Śyāma, who abounds in sweetness. Places the enchanting flute To his well-formed lips and plays. He performed the rāsa-līlā In the forest in the shadow Of the spotless Tree of Wishes. The moon is lovely over the shore, Near the immaculate Tree of Wishes On a night in beautiful śarad: The Foster Son of Nanda sports there As the cool, gentle. Fragrant wind blows. The wonderfully rhythmic mṛdaṅga And the entrancing belt of tiny bells Make their sounds. The Ocean of Rasa, the Lover, Performed the rāsa-līlā in the forest On the bank of the Yamuna. Seeing his bee-like play. The birds, beasts and creepers Are fascinated. The deer and cows were charmed. Along with divine maidens so immersed in love That they threw off their garments. Crowds of stars grew startled— The circle moon went slow And crores of Kamadevas were robbed of their senses. In very lovingembraces —Drinking from his lips— The sakhīs are plunged in bliss. Śrī Hit Harivaṃśa says. Those who delight in rasa obtain their joy In seeing his bee-like play.'

The two lovers enjoy themselves in the bower. In the splendor of the forest Bursts of joy shower Their incomparable bodies — one dark, one fair! On Kamadeva the Great’s marvelous battlefield The sound of ornaments Is for the kettledrums. As the Champions engage each other, Crores of emotions arise In each and every limb. From the burden of the fighting The Weak One is quite spent: Her beautiful eyes drowse. Her wearied body rests Without care, asleep In the Beloved’s lap. For fondling, Her excited Lover Touches her thighs, navel and breasts. His body, fatigued and trembling. He stared at that one— Whose splendor on earth is amazing. The Clever Lady looked up at him. Filled with the poison of love. And courageously gave the nectar of her lips. Imbibing a great sweetness. They arose quickly— Meeting like fish in water... —Just now I saw In Your face Such savory, bimba-like lips! Even though awake His mind became entranced And fell into the snares of hundreds of dynasties of Kamadevas... —Only once, O Beautiful One, With a spontaneous love Give me the nectar of your lips! — O sakhī, preserve My body at the temple Of your own Lotus Feet! The Beloved said — O say! Where were you. Dear One, Great King of the new bower? —Why, this dealing In contriving love-greedy words Without action? Hearing such things From the Proud Maiden’s mouth, He could not remain resolute inwardly. His heart confused, Pervaded by the sorrow of separation. He heaved great sighs. Śrī Hit Harivaṃśa says. Drawn by her arms. He found shelter between her breasts. The Couple’s embrace Gave birth to such joy That the evening became a moment.

English translation

Together with Śyāma in the Rasa circle Rādhikā looks beautiful. Nanda-lāla is in the midst of the Braj maidens, the color Of campak flowers, as though a cloud were surrounded By lightning or an emerald set in gold. The one who gives joy does the steps. Pauses and tatta the! hand motions. According to the seven tones, sa ri ga ma pa dha ni. In the emotion of the dance she is a picture In the blue costume she wears: Her face shines Like moonlight in the cloudy skies in the sign of makar. The ragas and raginis and various rhythms Adhere to musical science. The full moon rests In the heaven in a night in śarad. The one who moves like an intoxicated female elephant Has dispelled the madness of Kamadeva from the Lord, The Swan who has the waist of a Lion, says Śrī Hit Harivaṃśa.

English translation

It is on the pleasure-giving, lovely and auspicious shore. Sharing an ever new and profound Love, the Youthful Hero And the Clever Lady sport. Having touched the rasa bearing Waves of the cool Daughter of the Sun, The breeze rains soft drops of water. There an excellent Tree of Wishes. is The fragrance of lotus and campak blossoms Delights the hearts of the charming Couple. Best in all the sudhamg’s wantonness They sing and dance With voices blended in novel ways. It astonishes crores of Kamadevas, Who bow their heads: Together with fawns, peacocks, swans, bees and cuckoos. A goldbn vessel, filled with sweet drink, Shines in the grove At the couch prepared of kusum flowers. At evening enjoying mutually many pleasures. The Two equip their armies For the battle of sexual dalliance. The Lord of troops of lovers Seizes the hand of the young Maiden And cleverly loosens her waistband. No! No! She speaks her nectarine words. But the Lover pays no heed To the anger of love. Śrī Hit Harivaṃśa says. The enjoyers of rasa, Lalita and the others, Look through an aperture in the house of creepers— Filled to the brim with incomparable bliss, Powerless to breathe: tears of joy Choke their eyes and throats!
