English translation

Madan Gopāla’s flute is enchanting. Hearing its sweetness, (Listen, O Rādhikā!) Destroys the pain of the King of Desire. On the full moon night of śarad in Vrnda forest, O sakhī, a fragrant, cool wind Was blowing very gently. On the bank of the Chief of Purifiers The black bees worshipped the lotus. Beneath the Tree of Wishes Balvlr' sported in the rāsa-līlā. Best in the whole circle, You were the one who joined with Hari. To what hall I compare you adorned in the choicest costume? You are the one with the golden body. Your Darling is the sapphire. Oh, Harivaṃśa is a slave for sacrifice to the two ease-giving Swans!

Today Śyāmā is beautiful,. The Crown Jewel Among the group of fresh Braj maidens. The sweetness of all her parts. From head to foot. Charmed Śyāma, her Lord. The plait of braided hair Gleams Over her golden lotus face: It appears as though Rahu' In the midst Devoured Her moon-set curls. \ The hair-part on the Beloved’s head, Which is adorned, Appears like good fortune’s essence in a flowing stream. Her eyebrows are like Kamadeva’s bows: Her eyes the arrows. The lineof collyrium theī>oints. Her tilak is radiant: An earring is at her cheek, A pearl jewel in her nose. For her teeth like jasmine The beautiful lips are leaves. She gives peace to her lover’s heart. O sakhī, in the middle of her chin Is a very lovely. Natural, dark spot! Bound tightly in her bodice. Her jewel-box breasts Are life itself to the Beloved. Her entrancing arms, like the stems of lotuses. Are adorned with shimmering bangles. Their touch can be compared to moving waters. Itappears as though the Mistress Has made a beautiful edging Around the tree that is Śyāma’s head. Her navel is as deep as a pond For Mohan’s mind. Like a fish to play in. Her waist is very thin. Her hips are wide and girdled with a belt of tiny bells. Her thighs are like the stalks of plantain trees. The brilliance of the red dye'— Together with ornaments of her lotus feet Are the protector of the Lover’s heart. Alluring him in novel ways. The Female Elephant Sports with the Male Elephant. Śrī Hit Harivaṃśa says, Praise to the exceedingly spotless Glory of Śyāmā! Singing and hearing it Gives pleasure: It is the crusher of all sins.

In the month of śarad On the night of the full moon, A cool, gentle, fragrant breeze was blowing. Greedy for pollen. The bee has grown weary: The parrots and cuckoos sing. O sakhī, there is a bed for the Beloved, Made of petals and young leaves In many different colors. There are vessels of gold. Filled with various sweet drinks. They are arranged carefully on the earth. On that bed The skillful Boy and Girl Amuse themselves a great deal. The Lover’s hand Touches her beautiful breast. She covers it over with a garment. The Passionate Lady Gazes with contracted eyebrows. She is constantly contrary at every step of the way. Agitated and very much subject To his passion, Hari swiftly seizes her by the shoulder. The Clever Boy loosens Her waistband And puUs away her bluearf. The Woman Under the pretext of anger and obstinacy Speaks softly the sweet words, No! No! Embracing in the reversed position,' They present their beautiful and charming Private sports. It is though a golden creeper as Shines on a tree Made of sapphires. On the surfaces of the foreheads Of the Couple uniting There are drops of perspiration. »» Lalita and the others Fan with the borders of their cloaks. The passion in their hearts is unassailable. The two young people are swinging. When they arose at dawn. Their bodies told them Of the color of love’s delight, born in the night. Filled with great feeling. They sing in unison With a low, sweet and penetrating sound. At intervals The eyelids of his Dear One Charm the mind of the Beloved. The very delicate Woman Fears in her heart The gusts of wind against the precious swing. Shivering greatly, Clasping the chest of her lover, She offers her breasts for a new embrace. His spotless garland Became entangled with her bangles And strands of his curls with her earrings. Filled with trembling. How shall they be disengaged? Their bliss grew manifold. Repeatedly gazing upon the two faces. Like the moon and the cakora bird, Lalita and the others rejoiced. Harivaṃśa spreads the border of his garment:' Praising And giving his blessing!

Hearing the sweet sound Of the bangles, the belt of tiny bells and the anklets. The birds and the beasts grew joyful. Amid the circle of young maidens Ghana Śyāma' Presented a raga in the sararhg mode. The blending of the cymbal, mṛdaṅga, Uparhg, drum and tambourine Enhanced the ocean of rasa. The faultless Daughter of Vrbhanu, Portrayed the various parts Of the sudhaṅga dance. Her technique was expert. The curls dangled in her eyes. Her eyebrows caused Kamadeva to dance. She pleased the King of Braj, her Lord/ By doing new steps In the tattatheP movement. The Crown Jewel of Sovereigns/ Bountiful to all, Caused showers to fall from clouds of bliss. As for the young maidens, They received suitable embracing. Kissing and fondling. kusum flowers. Delightedly raining The Lord of Heaven— Indra Beat the tom-tom. Śrī Hit Harivaṃśa says, the glory of the bower Of the Lover, Rādhā’s Lord, Has pervaded the world!
