atrāntare'masṛṇa-roṣa-vaśām apāra- niḥśvāsa-niḥsaha-mukhīṁ sumukhīm upetya | savrīḍam īkṣita-sakhī-vadanāṁ dinānte sānanda-gadgada-padaṁ harir ity uvaca

English translation

And then, so gentle at her tears and rage, he brought a brightness to her ravaged face: in joy and modesty a friend to her, so Hari, stammering that evening, said:

वदसि यदि किञ्चिद् अपि दन्त-रुचि-कौमुदी हरति दर-तिमिरम् अतिघोरम् । स्फुरद्-अधर-सीधवे तव वदन-चन्द्रमा रोचयतु लोचन-चकोरं प्रिये चारु-शीले मुञ्च मयि मानम् अनिदानं । सपदि मदनानलो दहति मम मानसम् देहि मुख-कमल-मधु-पानं ॥ध्रुव-पदं ॥

vadasi yadi kiñcid api danta-ruci-kaumudī harati dara-timiram atighoram | sphurad-adhara-sīdhave tava vadana-candramā rocayatu locana-cakoraṁ priye cāru-śīle muñca mayi mānam anidānaṁ | sapadi madanānalo dahati mama mānasam dehi mukha-kamala-madhu-pānaṁ ||dhruva-padaṁ ||

English translation

A little even of your glowing teeth dispels my gloominess, as does the moon's rich nectar trembling from your lower lip to salve my longing in chakora eyes. My love, you have no cause to curse me so: I ask, as this fierce passion burns my mind, to drink the nectar from your lotus mouth.

satyam evāsi yadi sudati mayi kopinī dehi khara-nakhara-śara-ghātam | ghaṭaya bhuja-bandhanaṁ janaya rada-khaṇḍanaṁ yena vā bhavati sukha-jātaṁ

If you, with teeth so beautiful, are truly angry, claw at me with arrow nails, bind me with your arms, and set your teeth to do whatever urges pleasure on. My love, you have no cause to curse me so: I ask, as this fierce passion burns my mind, to drink the nectar from your lotus mouth.

English translation

nīla-nalinābham api tanvi tava locanaṁ dhārayati koka-nada-rūpaṁ | kusuma-śara-bāṇa-bhāvena yadi rañjayasi kṛṣṇam idam etad anurūpam

English translation

Once blue lotuses, your eyes now glow with red of water lilies, slender Rādhā: the darts that strike my body with their fiery love assume your eye’s becoming hue. My love, you have no cause to curse me so: I ask, as this fierce passion burns my mind, to drink the nectar from your lotus mouth.

स्फुरतु कुच-कुम्भयोर् उपरि मणि-मञ्जरी रञ्जयतु तव हृदय-देशम् । रसतु रशनापि तव घन-जघन-मण्डले घोषयतु मन्मथ-निदेशम्

sphuratu kuca-kumbhayor upari maṇi-mañjarī rañjayatu tava hṛdaya-deśam | rasatu raśanāpi tava ghana-jaghana-maṇḍale ghoṣayatu manmatha-nideśam

English translation

May gems which, trembling, hang beneath the pitcher breasts entreat those quarters of the heart, and girdle zone that circles those strong hips obey the murmuring of the love-god there. iti caṭula-cāṭu-paṭu-cāru mura-vairiṇo rādhikām adhi vacana-jātam | jayatu jayadeva-kavi-bhāratī-bhūṣitaṁ māninī-jana-janita-śātam

English translation

In words so sweet so pungent and so pleasing Mura's enemy addresses Rādhā: so the poet Jayadeva wins his joy in eloquence of Sarasvatī. My love, you have no cause to curse me so: I ask, as this fierce passion burns my mind, to drink the nectar from your lotus mouth.

परिहर कृतातङ्के शङ्कां त्वया सततं घन- स्तन-जघनयाक्रान्ते स्वान्ते परान्-अवकाशिनी । विशति वितनोर् अन्यो धन्यो न कोऽपि ममान्तरं प्रणयिनि परीरम्भारम्भे विधेहि विधेयताम्

parihara kṛtātaṅke śaṅkāṁ tvayā satataṁ ghana- stana-jaghanayākrānte svānte parān-avakāśinī | viśati vitanor anyo dhanyo na ko'pi mamāntaraṁ praṇayini parīrambhārambhe vidhehi vidheyatām

English translation

How can there be, with spreading breasts and heavy haunches, latitude for someone else? In me alone, the bodiless, embracing you, the love-god holds you to his heart.

मुग्धे विधेहि मयि निर्दय-दन्त-दंश- दोर्-वल्लि-बन्ध-निविड-स्तन-पीडनानि । चण्डि त्वम् एव मुदम् उद्वह पञ्च-बाण- चाण्डाल-काण्ड-दलनाद् असवः प्रयान्ति

mugdhe vidhehi mayi nirdaya-danta-daṁśa- dor-valli-bandha-niviḍa-stana-pīḍanāni | caṇḍi tvam eva mudam udvaha pañca-bāṇa- cāṇḍāla-kāṇḍa-dalanād asavaḥ prayānti

English translation

Compress and lose me in those urgent breasts, bind hard your arms about me, and, like Durga, have passion’s rage of teeth and fivefold arrows tear the life-breath out of me.

शशि-मुखि तव भाति भङ्गुर-भ्रूर् युव-जन-मोह-कराल-काल-सर्पी । तद्-उदित-भय-भञ्जनाय यूनां त्वद्-अधर-सीधु-सुधैव सिद्ध-मन्त्रः

śaśi-mukhi tava bhāti bhaṅgura-bhrūr yuva-jana-moha-karāla-kāla-sarpī | tad-udita-bhaya-bhañjanāya yūnāṁ tvad-adhara-sīdhu-sudhaiva siddha-mantraḥ

English translation

Alarm the young men with those serpent-sooted eyebrows frowning on a moon-like face, and devastate them where the antidote is that sweet nectar spilling from your lip.

व्यथयति वृथा मौनं तन्वि प्रपञ्चय पञ्चमं तरुणि मधुरालापैस् तापं विनोदय दृष्टिभिः । सुमुखि विमुखी-भावं तावद् विमुञ्च न मुञ्च मां स्वयम् अतिशय-स्निग्धो मुग्धे प्रियोऽयम् उपस्थितः

vyathayati vṛthā maunaṁ tanvi prapañcaya pañcamaṁ taruṇi madhurālāpais tāpaṁ vinodaya dṛṣṭibhiḥ | sumukhi vimukhī-bhāvaṁ tāvad vimuñca na muñca māṁ svayam atiśaya-snigdho mugdhe priyo'yam upasthitaḥ

English translation

Needlessly your silence hurts me: sing and cure my fevered longing with a glance. Do not withdraw your graciousness from one whose true bewilderment shines forth his love.

बन्धूक-द्युति-बान्धवोऽयम् अधरः स्निग्धो मधूक-च्छविर् गण्डश् चण्डि चकास्ति नील-नलिन-श्री-मोचनं लोचनम् । नासाभ्येति तिल-प्रसून-पदवीं कुन्दाभ-दन्ति प्रिये प्रायस् त्वन्-मुख-सेवया विजयते विश्वं स पुष्पायुधः

bandhūka-dyuti-bāndhavo'yam adharaḥ snigdho madhūka-cchavir gaṇḍaś caṇḍi cakāsti nīla-nalina-śrī-mocanaṁ locanam | nāsābhyeti tila-prasūna-padavīṁ kundābha-danti priye prāyas tvan-mukha-sevayā vijayate viśvaṁ sa puṣpāyudhaḥ

English translation

Bandūka are your lips, madūka cheeks, your nose the sesame, white jasmine teeth the lotus glances: so the flower-weaponed god in worshipping has conquered all.

dṛśau tava madālase vadanam indu-sandīpanaṁ gatir jana-manoramā vijitārambhaṁ ūru-dvayam | ratis tava kalāvatī rucira-citra-lekhe bhruvāv aho vibudha-yauvataṁ vahasi tanvi pṛthvī-gatā

English translation

Your eyes so drugged with love, the moon your face, and thighs as plantains moving, charm the races. So skilled your loving, and so bright your brow, you lead all heavenly women here on earth.

May Hari increase your joy. In battle he collided with the elephant Kuvalayāpīḍa, whose swelling temples recalled Rādhā’s full breasts. Whenever that memory bewildered him he perspired and closed his eyes for an instant, while Kaṁsa’s people cried again and again, ‘Victory! Victory!’
