Sourceनारद उवाच।। भूमिदानकृतं पुण्यं पापं तद्धरणेन यत् ।। परभूमौ श्राद्धरूपं कूपे कुपदजं तथा ।। १ ।। अम्बुवीचीभूखननबीजत्यागजमेव च ।। दीपादिस्थापनात्पापं श्रोतुमिच्छामि यत्नतः ।। २ ।। अन्यद्वा पृथिवीजन्यं पापं यत्प्रश्नतः परम् ।। यदस्ति तत्प्रतीकारं वद वेदविदां वर ।।३।। नारायण उवाच।। वितस्तिमात्रं भूमिं च यो ददाति च भारते।। सन्ध्यापूताय विप्राय स यायाद्विष्णुमन्दिरम् ।।४।। भूमिं च सर्वसस्याढ्या ब्राह्मणाय ददाति यः।। भूमिरेणुप्रमाणे च वर्षे विष्णुपदे वसेत्।।५।। ग्रामं भूमिं च धान्यं च यो ददात्याददाति यः ।। सर्वपापाद्विनिर्मुक्तौ चोभौ वैकुण्ठवासिनौ ।। ६ ।। भूमिदानं च तत्काले यः साधुश्चानुमोदते ।। स प्रयाति च वैकुण्ठं मित्रगोत्रसमन्वितः ।। ७ ।। स्वदत्तां परदत्तां वा ब्रह्मवृत्तिं हरेत्तु यः ।। कालसूत्रे तिष्ठति स यावच्चन्द्रदिवाकरौ ।। ८ ।। तत्पुत्रपौत्रप्रभृतिर्भूमिहीनः श्रिया हतः ।। सुखहीनो दरिद्रः स्यादन्ते याति च रौरवम् ।। ९ ।। गवां मार्गं विनिष्कृष्य यश्च सस्यं ददाति सः ।। दिव्यं वर्षशतं चैव कुम्भीपाके च तिष्ठति ।। 2.9.१० ।। गोष्ठं तडागं निष्कृष्य मार्गं सस्यं ददाति यः ।। स च तिष्ठत्यसीपत्रे यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश ।। ११ ।। न पञ्चपिण्डमुद्धृत्य स्नाति कूपे परस्य यः।। प्राप्नोति नरकं चैव न स्नानफलमेव च ।।१२।। कामी भूमौ च रहसि बीजत्यागं करोति यः ।। स्निग्धरेणुप्रमाणं च वर्षं तिष्ठति रौरवे ।। १३ ।। अम्बुवीच्यम्बुखननं यः करोति च मानवः ।। स याति कृमिदंशं च स्थितिस्तत्र चतुर्युगम् ।। १४ ।। परकीये लुप्तकूपे कूपं मूढः करोति यः ।। पुष्करिण्यां च लुप्तायां तां ददाति च यो नरः ।। १५ ।। सर्वं फलं परस्यैव तप्तसूर्मिं व्रजेत्तु सः ।। तत्र तिष्ठति संतप्तो यावदिद्राश्चतुर्दश ।। १५ ।। परकीयतडागे च पङ्कमुद्धृत्य चोत्सृजेत् ।। रेणुप्रमाणवर्षं च ब्रह्मलोके वसेन्नरः ।।१७।। पिण्डं पित्रे भूतिभर्त्तुर्न प्रदाय च मानवः ।। श्राद्धं करोति यो मूढो नरकं याति निश्चितम् ।। १८ ।। भूमौ दीपं योऽर्पयति सोऽन्धः सप्तसु जन्मसु ।। भूमौ शंखं च संस्थाप्य कुष्ठं जन्मान्तरे लभेत् ।। १९ ।। मुक्तामाणिक्यहीरं च सुवर्णं च मणिं तथा ।। यश्च संस्थापयेद्भूमौ दरिद्रः सप्तजन्मसु ।। 2.9.२० ।। शिवलिङ्गं शिलामर्च्यां यश्चार्पयति भूतले ।। शतमन्वन्तरं यावत्कृमिभक्षे स तिष्ठति ।।२१।। सूक्तं मन्त्रं शिलातोयं पुष्पं च तुलसीदलम् ।। यश्चार्पयति भूमौ च स तिष्ठेन्नरके युगम् ।।२२।। जपमालां पुष्पमालां कर्पूरं रोचनां तथा ।। यो मूढश्चार्पयेद्भूमौ स याति नरकं ध्रुवम् ।। २३ ।। मुने चन्दनकाष्ठं च रुद्राक्षं कुशमूलकम् ।। संस्थाप्य भूमौ नरके वसेन्मन्वन्तरावधि ।। २४ ।। पुस्तकं यज्ञसूत्रं च भूमौ संस्थापयेत्तु यः।। न भवेद्विप्रयोनौ च तस्य जन्मान्तरे जनिः।।२९।। ब्रह्महत्यासमं पापमिह वै लभते ध्रुवम्।। ग्रन्थियुक्तं यज्ञसूत्रं पूज्यं स्यात्सर्ववर्णकैः ।। २६ ।। यज्ञं कृत्वा तु यो भूमिं क्षीरेण नहि सिञ्चति।। स याति तप्तसूर्मिं च संतप्तः सर्वजन्मसु ।।२७।। भूकम्पे ग्रहणे यो हि करोति खननं भुवः ।। जन्मान्तरे महापापी सोऽङ्गहीनो भवेद्ध्रुवम् ।।२८।। भवनं यत्र सर्वेषां भूमिस्तेन प्रकीर्त्तिता।।। वसुरत्नं या दधाति वसुधा च वसुन्धरा।।२९।। हरेरूरौ च या जाता सा चोर्वी परिकीर्त्तिता ।। धरा धरित्री धरणी सर्वेषां धरणात्तु या ।। 2.9.३० ।। इज्या च यागभरणात्क्षोणी क्षीणा लये च या ।। महालये क्षयं याति क्षितिस्तेन प्रकीर्तिता ।। ३१ ।। काश्यपी कश्यपस्येयमचला स्थितिरूपतः ।। विश्वम्भरा तद्धरणाच्चानन्ताऽनन्तरूपतः ।। ३२ ।। पृथ्वी पृधुककन्यात्वाद्विस्तृतत्वान्मही मुने ।। ३३ ।। इति श्रीब्रह्मवैवर्त्ते महापुराणे द्वितीये प्रकृतिखण्डे नारदनाराणयसंवादे पृथिव्युपाख्यानं नाम नवमोऽध्यायः ।। ९ ।।
nārada uvāca|| bhūmidānakṛtaṃ puṇyaṃ pāpaṃ taddharaṇena yat || parabhūmau śrāddharūpaṃ kūpe kupadajaṃ tathā || 1 || ambuvīcībhūkhananabījatyāgajameva ca || dīpādisthāpanātpāpaṃ śrotumicchāmi yatnataḥ || 2 || anyadvā pṛthivījanyaṃ pāpaṃ yatpraśnataḥ param || yadasti tatpratīkāraṃ vada vedavidāṃ vara ||3|| nārāyaṇa uvāca|| vitastimātraṃ bhūmiṃ ca yo dadāti ca bhārate|| sandhyāpūtāya viprāya sa yāyādviṣṇumandiram ||4|| bhūmiṃ ca sarvasasyāḍhyā brāhmaṇāya dadāti yaḥ|| bhūmireṇupramāṇe ca varṣe viṣṇupade vaset||5|| grāmaṃ bhūmiṃ ca dhānyaṃ ca yo dadātyādadāti yaḥ || sarvapāpādvinirmuktau cobhau vaikuṇṭhavāsinau || 6 || bhūmidānaṃ ca tatkāle yaḥ sādhuścānumodate || sa prayāti ca vaikuṇṭhaṃ mitragotrasamanvitaḥ || 7 || svadattāṃ paradattāṃ vā brahmavṛttiṃ harettu yaḥ || kālasūtre tiṣṭhati sa yāvaccandradivākarau || 8 || tatputrapautraprabhṛtirbhūmihīnaḥ śriyā hataḥ || sukhahīno daridraḥ syādante yāti ca rauravam || 9 || gavāṃ mārgaṃ viniṣkṛṣya yaśca sasyaṃ dadāti saḥ || divyaṃ varṣaśataṃ caiva kumbhīpāke ca tiṣṭhati || 2.9.10 || goṣṭhaṃ taḍāgaṃ niṣkṛṣya mārgaṃ sasyaṃ dadāti yaḥ || sa ca tiṣṭhatyasīpatre yāvadindrāścaturdaśa || 11 || na pañcapiṇḍamuddhṛtya snāti kūpe parasya yaḥ|| prāpnoti narakaṃ caiva na snānaphalameva ca ||12|| kāmī bhūmau ca rahasi bījatyāgaṃ karoti yaḥ || snigdhareṇupramāṇaṃ ca varṣaṃ tiṣṭhati raurave || 13 || ambuvīcyambukhananaṃ yaḥ karoti ca mānavaḥ || sa yāti kṛmidaṃśaṃ ca sthitistatra caturyugam || 14 || parakīye luptakūpe kūpaṃ mūḍhaḥ karoti yaḥ || puṣkariṇyāṃ ca luptāyāṃ tāṃ dadāti ca yo naraḥ || 15 || sarvaṃ phalaṃ parasyaiva taptasūrmiṃ vrajettu saḥ || tatra tiṣṭhati saṃtapto yāvadidrāścaturdaśa || 15 || parakīyataḍāge ca paṅkamuddhṛtya cotsṛjet || reṇupramāṇavarṣaṃ ca brahmaloke vasennaraḥ ||17|| piṇḍaṃ pitre bhūtibhartturna pradāya ca mānavaḥ || śrāddhaṃ karoti yo mūḍho narakaṃ yāti niścitam || 18 || bhūmau dīpaṃ yo'rpayati so'ndhaḥ saptasu janmasu || bhūmau śaṃkhaṃ ca saṃsthāpya kuṣṭhaṃ janmāntare labhet || 19 || muktāmāṇikyahīraṃ ca suvarṇaṃ ca maṇiṃ tathā || yaśca saṃsthāpayedbhūmau daridraḥ saptajanmasu || 2.9.20 || śivaliṅgaṃ śilāmarcyāṃ yaścārpayati bhūtale || śatamanvantaraṃ yāvatkṛmibhakṣe sa tiṣṭhati ||21|| sūktaṃ mantraṃ śilātoyaṃ puṣpaṃ ca tulasīdalam || yaścārpayati bhūmau ca sa tiṣṭhennarake yugam ||22|| japamālāṃ puṣpamālāṃ karpūraṃ rocanāṃ tathā || yo mūḍhaścārpayedbhūmau sa yāti narakaṃ dhruvam || 23 || mune candanakāṣṭhaṃ ca rudrākṣaṃ kuśamūlakam || saṃsthāpya bhūmau narake vasenmanvantarāvadhi || 24 || pustakaṃ yajñasūtraṃ ca bhūmau saṃsthāpayettu yaḥ|| na bhavedviprayonau ca tasya janmāntare janiḥ||29|| brahmahatyāsamaṃ pāpamiha vai labhate dhruvam|| granthiyuktaṃ yajñasūtraṃ pūjyaṃ syātsarvavarṇakaiḥ || 26 || yajñaṃ kṛtvā tu yo bhūmiṃ kṣīreṇa nahi siñcati|| sa yāti taptasūrmiṃ ca saṃtaptaḥ sarvajanmasu ||27|| bhūkampe grahaṇe yo hi karoti khananaṃ bhuvaḥ || janmāntare mahāpāpī so'ṅgahīno bhaveddhruvam ||28|| bhavanaṃ yatra sarveṣāṃ bhūmistena prakīrttitā||| vasuratnaṃ yā dadhāti vasudhā ca vasundharā||29|| harerūrau ca yā jātā sā corvī parikīrttitā || dharā dharitrī dharaṇī sarveṣāṃ dharaṇāttu yā || 2.9.30 || ijyā ca yāgabharaṇātkṣoṇī kṣīṇā laye ca yā || mahālaye kṣayaṃ yāti kṣitistena prakīrtitā || 31 || kāśyapī kaśyapasyeyamacalā sthitirūpataḥ || viśvambharā taddharaṇāccānantā'nantarūpataḥ || 32 || pṛthvī pṛdhukakanyātvādvistṛtatvānmahī mune || 33 || iti śrībrahmavaivartte mahāpurāṇe dvitīye prakṛtikhaṇḍe nāradanārāṇayasaṃvāde pṛthivyupākhyānaṃ nāma navamo'dhyāyaḥ || 9 ||
English translation
The story of PrthvI Narada said—“O lord, I would like to know the merit, one earns by giving away land in charity and the sin one earns by forcibly taking it back. Besides the sin one earns, by performing sraddha over the land of others, digging of wells over the land of others, dropping of semen over the earth and the burning of flames.
O best of those well-versed in Vedas, you tell me something else about the sins relating to the earth and the ways and means to get rid of them.” Narayana said—“In the land of Bharata whosoever gives away a small piece of land in charity to a Brahmana, he indeed goes to the abode of lord Visnu, the one who gives away in charity to Brahmanas, land filled with vegetation and crops he enjoys to reside in the Visnuloka for a long time.
One who gives away in charity the land and cereals, is relieved of all his sins and goes to VaikiuUha. Such of the people who support who support the giving away in charity of the laud also proceed to the Vaikuntha together with their friends and relatives.
The one who usurps the land given away in charity to a Brahinana is thrown into the kcilasutra hell till the sun and moon last.
All his sons and grandsons and other members of the family are deprived of the land, riches and the pleasures and they become paupers.
Thereafter they are thrown in the terrific hell.
The one who ploughs the field which is meant for the grazing of the cows, is thrown into the terrific hell for a hundred years.
cTm -tTnf wr I The one who breaks the cowshed and the tanks to construct a road or irrigate the land, he is thrown into the hell named Asipatra for the duration of the time of fourteen Indras, One who takes bath in well or tank without taking out five fists filled with earth, is deprived of the merit of taking bath and falls in the hell for the number of years equivalent to the particles of the dust of the land.
The one who excavates the land at the sojourn of ambuvici yoga is thrown into the Krmidarhsa hell as long as the period of fowvyugas, The one who rebuilds others well or step-well or renovates them in his own name, he falls into the terrific hell for a period of the live of fourteen Indras and the entire merit of his reconstruction goes to others. The one who takes away the mud from the tank owned by others cleansing the same and then forgets about it, he earns great merit enjoying a comfortable living in Brahmaloka for a large number of years.
ftnrt ftt tT-qm: I The one who performs sraddha over the land of others without providing any compensation to the land owner, he surely goes to well.
The One who places the lamp over the earth, he becomes blind for seven birth and the one who places the conch on the earth he attracts the disease of leprosy in next birth.
The one who places the gems, rubies, precious stones, gold and crystal over the earth becomes pauper in coming seven births. The one who places the Sivalinga and Sdlagrdma over the earth, is thrown in the Krmihhaksa hell for a hundred of manvantaras. The one who places the Vedic sulctas, the mantras, Sdlagrdma, sacred water, the flower and Tulasi leaves over the ground, he is lodged in the hell for fom yugas.
The one who places the rosary, the garland of flowers, camphor and Gorocana on earth, earn and dwelling of a hell.
O sage, the one who places the sandal-wood, Rudraksa, the roots of Kusa grass over the earth, he is thrown into the hell for a manvantara.
The one who places a book and the yajnopavita over the earth, the person can never be born in the race of Brahmana for many times to comes.
And the earns the sin of Brahmahatyd. The yajnasutra which is tied to a Brahmana has to be adored in all conditions.
The one who does not pour the milk over the ground after performing of the yajna, he always suffers in many coming birth and is thrown into the hell. The one who digs the earth at the time of earthquake and at the time of eclipse, such a great sinner is born deformed for many births.
Since the houses of all the people are constructed over the earth that is why it is called Bhumi, Since she bears the riches in her womb she is called Vasundhara.
Since she was bom out of the high of the lord she has been given the name of UrvT. Since she bears the load of everyone she is known as Dhard and Dharani.
Since the ydgas are performed over her, she is called ij'yd. Because she is reduced in rise during the dissolution, she is known as Ksonl. Since she is destroyed completely as the time of dissolution she is called Ksiti.
Since she is the daughter of Kasyapa, she is also known as KasyapT. Since she remain stable, she is known as immovable. Since she feeds the entire universe, she is known as Visvambhara.
Since she has the endless form she is called O' sage, since she is the dauther of Prthu, she is known as PrthvI and having its immeasurable expanse, she is known as Maht.
