Sourceनारायण उवाच ।। वाग्देवतायाः स्तवनं श्रूयतां सर्वकामदम् ।। महामुनिर्याज्ञवल्क्यो येन तुष्टाव तां पुरा।।१।। गुरुशापाच्च स मुनिर्हतविद्यो बभूव ह।। तदाऽऽजगाम दुःखार्तो रविस्थानं च पुण्यदम् ।। २ ।। संप्राप्य तपसा सूर्य्यं कोणार्के दृष्टिगोचरे ।। तुष्टाव सूर्य्यं शोकेन रुरोद च पुनः पुनः ।। ३ ।। सूर्य्यस्तं पाठयामास वेदवेदाङ्गमीश्वरः ।। उवाच स्तुहि वाग्देवीं भक्त्या च स्मृतिहेतवे ।। ४ ।। तमित्युक्त्वा दीननाथो ह्यन्तर्द्धानं जगाम सः ।। मुनिः स्नात्वा च तुष्टाव भक्तिनम्रात्मकन्धरः ।।५।। याज्ञवल्क्य उवाच ।। कृपां कुरु जगन्मातर्मामेवं हततेजसम्।। गुरुशापात्स्मृतिभ्रष्टं विद्याहीनं च दुःखितम्।।६।। ज्ञानं देहि स्मृतिं देहि विद्यां विद्याधिदेवते ।। प्रतिष्ठां कवितां देहि शक्तिं शिष्यप्रबोधिकाम्।।७।। ग्रन्थनिर्मितिशक्तिं च सच्छिष्यं सुप्रतिष्ठितम् ।। प्रतिभां सत्सभायां च विचारक्षमतां शुभाम् ।। ८ ।। लुप्तां सर्वां दैववशान्नवां कुरु पुनः पुनः ।। यथाऽङ्कुरं जनयति भगवान्योगमायया ।। ९ ।। ब्रह्मस्वरूपा परमा ज्योतीरूपा सनातनी ।। सर्वविद्याधिदेवी या तस्यै वाण्ये नमो नमः ।। 2.5.१० ।। यया विना जगत्सर्वं शश्वज्जीवन्मृतं सदा ।। ज्ञानाघिदेवी या तस्यै सरस्वत्यै नमो नमः ।। ११ ।। यया विना जगत्सर्वं मूकमुन्मत्तवत्सदा ।। वागधिष्ठातृदेवी या तस्यै वाण्यै नमो नमः ।। १२ ।। हिमचन्दनकुन्देन्दुकुमुदाम्भोज सन्निभा ।। वर्णाधिदेवी या तस्यै चाक्षरायै नमो नमः ।। १३ ।। विसर्गबिन्दुमात्राणां यदधिष्ठानमेव च ।। इत्थं त्वं गीयसे सद्भिर्भारत्यै ते नमो नमः ।।१४।। यया विनाऽत्र संख्याकृत्संख्यां कर्त्तुं न शक्नुते ।। कालसंख्यास्वरूपा या तस्यै देव्यै नमो नमः ।। ।। १५ ।। व्याख्यास्वरूपा या देवी व्याख्याधिष्ठातृदेवता ।। भ्रमसिद्धान्तरूपा या तस्यै देव्यै नमो नमः ।। १६ ।। स्मृतिशक्ति ज्ञानशक्ति बुद्धिशक्तिस्वरूपिणी ।। प्रतिभाकल्पनाशक्तिर्या च तस्यै नमो नमः ।। १७ ।। सनत्कुमारो ब्रह्माणं ज्ञानं पप्रच्छ यत्र वै ।। बभूव जडवत्सोऽपि सिद्धान्तं कर्त्तुमक्षमः ।। १८।। तदाऽऽजगाम भगवानात्मा श्रीकृष्ण ईश्वरः ।। उवाच सत्तमं स्तोत्रं वाण्या इति विधिं तदा ।। १९ ।। स च तुष्टाव तां ब्रह्मा चाज्ञया परमात्मनः ।। चकार तत्प्रसादेन तदा सिद्धान्तमुत्तमम् ।। 2.5.२० ।। यदाऽप्यनन्तं पप्रच्छ ज्ञानमेकं वसुन्धरा ।। बभूव मूकवत्सोऽपि सिद्धान्तं कर्तुमक्षमः ।।२१।। तदा त्वां च स तुष्टाव संत्रस्तः कश्यपाज्ञया।। ततश्चकार सिद्धान्तं निर्मलं भ्रमभञ्जनम् ।। २२ ।। व्यासः पुराणसूत्रं च समपृच्छत वाल्मिकिम् ।। मौनीभूतः स सस्मार त्वामेव जगदंबिकाम् ।।२३।। तदा चकार सिद्धान्तं त्वद्वरेण मुनीश्वरः ।। स प्राप निर्मलं ज्ञानं प्रमादध्वंसकारणम् ।।२४।। पुराणसूत्रं श्रुत्वा स व्यासः कृष्णकलोद्भवः।। त्वां सिषेवे च दध्यौ च शतवर्षं च पुष्करे ।। तदा त्वत्तो वरं प्राप्य स कवीन्द्रो बभूव ह ।।२५।। तदा वै वेदभागं च पुराणानि चकार ह ।। यदा महेन्द्रे पप्रच्छ तत्त्वज्ञानं शिवा शिवम् ।। २६ ।। क्षणं त्वामेव संचिन्त्य तस्यै ज्ञानं ददौ विभुः ।। पप्रच्छ शब्दशास्त्रं च महेन्द्रश्च बृहस्पतिम् ।। २७ ।। दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं च स त्वां दध्यौ च पुष्करे ।। तदा त्वत्तो वरं प्राप्य दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रकम् ।। उवाच शब्दशास्त्रं च तदर्थं च सुरेश्वरम् ।। २८ ।। अध्यापिताश्च यैः शिष्या यैरधीतं मुनीश्वरैः ।। ते च त्वां परिसंचिन्त्य प्रवर्त्तन्ते सुरेश्वरि ।। २९ ।। त्वं संस्तुता पूजिता च मुनीन्द्रमनुमानवैः ।। दैत्येन्द्रैश्च सुरैश्चापि ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादिभिः ।। 2.5.३० ।। जडीभूतः सहस्रास्यः पञ्चवक्त्रश्चतुर्मुखः ।। यां स्तोतुं किमहं स्तौमि तामेकास्येन मानवः ।।३१ ।। इत्युक्त्वा याज्ञवल्क्यश्च भक्तिनम्रात्मकन्धरः ।। प्रणनाम निराहारो रुरोद च मुहुर्मुहुः ।। ३२ ।। तदा ज्योतिस्त्वरूपा सा तेनादृष्टाऽप्युवाच तम् ।। सुकवीन्द्रो भवेत्युक्त्वा वैकुण्ठं च जगाम ह ।। ३३ ।। याज्ञवल्क्यकृतं वाणीस्तोत्रं यः संयतः पठेत् ।। स कवीन्द्रो महावाग्मी बृहस्पतिसमो भवेत् ।। ३४ ।। महामूर्खश्च दुर्मेधा वर्षमेकं च यः पठेत् ।। स पण्डितश्च मेधावी सुकविश्च भवेद्ध्रुवम् ।।३५।। इति श्रीब्रह्मवैवर्त्ते महापुराणे प्रकृतिखण्डे नारदनारायणसंवादे याज्ञवल्क्योक्तवाणीस्तवनं नाम पञ्चमोऽध्यायः।। ।। ५ ।।
nārāyaṇa uvāca || vāgdevatāyāḥ stavanaṃ śrūyatāṃ sarvakāmadam || mahāmuniryājñavalkyo yena tuṣṭāva tāṃ purā||1|| guruśāpācca sa munirhatavidyo babhūva ha|| tadā''jagāma duḥkhārto ravisthānaṃ ca puṇyadam || 2 || saṃprāpya tapasā sūryyaṃ koṇārke dṛṣṭigocare || tuṣṭāva sūryyaṃ śokena ruroda ca punaḥ punaḥ || 3 || sūryyastaṃ pāṭhayāmāsa vedavedāṅgamīśvaraḥ || uvāca stuhi vāgdevīṃ bhaktyā ca smṛtihetave || 4 || tamityuktvā dīnanātho hyantarddhānaṃ jagāma saḥ || muniḥ snātvā ca tuṣṭāva bhaktinamrātmakandharaḥ ||5|| yājñavalkya uvāca || kṛpāṃ kuru jaganmātarmāmevaṃ hatatejasam|| guruśāpātsmṛtibhraṣṭaṃ vidyāhīnaṃ ca duḥkhitam||6|| jñānaṃ dehi smṛtiṃ dehi vidyāṃ vidyādhidevate || pratiṣṭhāṃ kavitāṃ dehi śaktiṃ śiṣyaprabodhikām||7|| granthanirmitiśaktiṃ ca sacchiṣyaṃ supratiṣṭhitam || pratibhāṃ satsabhāyāṃ ca vicārakṣamatāṃ śubhām || 8 || luptāṃ sarvāṃ daivavaśānnavāṃ kuru punaḥ punaḥ || yathā'ṅkuraṃ janayati bhagavānyogamāyayā || 9 || brahmasvarūpā paramā jyotīrūpā sanātanī || sarvavidyādhidevī yā tasyai vāṇye namo namaḥ || 2.5.10 || yayā vinā jagatsarvaṃ śaśvajjīvanmṛtaṃ sadā || jñānāghidevī yā tasyai sarasvatyai namo namaḥ || 11 || yayā vinā jagatsarvaṃ mūkamunmattavatsadā || vāgadhiṣṭhātṛdevī yā tasyai vāṇyai namo namaḥ || 12 || himacandanakundendukumudāmbhoja sannibhā || varṇādhidevī yā tasyai cākṣarāyai namo namaḥ || 13 || visargabindumātrāṇāṃ yadadhiṣṭhānameva ca || itthaṃ tvaṃ gīyase sadbhirbhāratyai te namo namaḥ ||14|| yayā vinā'tra saṃkhyākṛtsaṃkhyāṃ karttuṃ na śaknute || kālasaṃkhyāsvarūpā yā tasyai devyai namo namaḥ || || 15 || vyākhyāsvarūpā yā devī vyākhyādhiṣṭhātṛdevatā || bhramasiddhāntarūpā yā tasyai devyai namo namaḥ || 16 || smṛtiśakti jñānaśakti buddhiśaktisvarūpiṇī || pratibhākalpanāśaktiryā ca tasyai namo namaḥ || 17 || sanatkumāro brahmāṇaṃ jñānaṃ papraccha yatra vai || babhūva jaḍavatso'pi siddhāntaṃ karttumakṣamaḥ || 18|| tadā''jagāma bhagavānātmā śrīkṛṣṇa īśvaraḥ || uvāca sattamaṃ stotraṃ vāṇyā iti vidhiṃ tadā || 19 || sa ca tuṣṭāva tāṃ brahmā cājñayā paramātmanaḥ || cakāra tatprasādena tadā siddhāntamuttamam || 2.5.20 || yadā'pyanantaṃ papraccha jñānamekaṃ vasundharā || babhūva mūkavatso'pi siddhāntaṃ kartumakṣamaḥ ||21|| tadā tvāṃ ca sa tuṣṭāva saṃtrastaḥ kaśyapājñayā|| tataścakāra siddhāntaṃ nirmalaṃ bhramabhañjanam || 22 || vyāsaḥ purāṇasūtraṃ ca samapṛcchata vālmikim || maunībhūtaḥ sa sasmāra tvāmeva jagadaṃbikām ||23|| tadā cakāra siddhāntaṃ tvadvareṇa munīśvaraḥ || sa prāpa nirmalaṃ jñānaṃ pramādadhvaṃsakāraṇam ||24|| purāṇasūtraṃ śrutvā sa vyāsaḥ kṛṣṇakalodbhavaḥ|| tvāṃ siṣeve ca dadhyau ca śatavarṣaṃ ca puṣkare || tadā tvatto varaṃ prāpya sa kavīndro babhūva ha ||25|| tadā vai vedabhāgaṃ ca purāṇāni cakāra ha || yadā mahendre papraccha tattvajñānaṃ śivā śivam || 26 || kṣaṇaṃ tvāmeva saṃcintya tasyai jñānaṃ dadau vibhuḥ || papraccha śabdaśāstraṃ ca mahendraśca bṛhaspatim || 27 || divyaṃ varṣasahasraṃ ca sa tvāṃ dadhyau ca puṣkare || tadā tvatto varaṃ prāpya divyaṃ varṣasahasrakam || uvāca śabdaśāstraṃ ca tadarthaṃ ca sureśvaram || 28 || adhyāpitāśca yaiḥ śiṣyā yairadhītaṃ munīśvaraiḥ || te ca tvāṃ parisaṃcintya pravarttante sureśvari || 29 || tvaṃ saṃstutā pūjitā ca munīndramanumānavaiḥ || daityendraiśca suraiścāpi brahmaviṣṇuśivādibhiḥ || 2.5.30 || jaḍībhūtaḥ sahasrāsyaḥ pañcavaktraścaturmukhaḥ || yāṃ stotuṃ kimahaṃ staumi tāmekāsyena mānavaḥ ||31 || ityuktvā yājñavalkyaśca bhaktinamrātmakandharaḥ || praṇanāma nirāhāro ruroda ca muhurmuhuḥ || 32 || tadā jyotistvarūpā sā tenādṛṣṭā'pyuvāca tam || sukavīndro bhavetyuktvā vaikuṇṭhaṃ ca jagāma ha || 33 || yājñavalkyakṛtaṃ vāṇīstotraṃ yaḥ saṃyataḥ paṭhet || sa kavīndro mahāvāgmī bṛhaspatisamo bhavet || 34 || mahāmūrkhaśca durmedhā varṣamekaṃ ca yaḥ paṭhet || sa paṇḍitaśca medhāvī sukaviśca bhaveddhruvam ||35|| iti śrībrahmavaivartte mahāpurāṇe prakṛtikhaṇḍe nāradanārāyaṇasaṃvāde yājñavalkyoktavāṇīstavanaṃ nāma pañcamo'dhyāyaḥ|| || 5 ||
English translation
Yajnavalkya offers prayer to Sarasvatl Narayana said—I am going to apprise you about the stotra of Sarasvatl which provides all the benefits. The sage Yajnavalkya had adored the goddess Sarasvatl by reciting this stotra.
As soon as the learning of Yajnavalkya came to an end because of the curse of his teacher, he was extremely grieved. He then went to the sacred abode of the sun.
He reached the Konarka region and he had an audience with the sun-god after which he adored him. He went on weeping again and again.
The sun-god then imparted the knowledge of Vedas and the post Vedic literature to the sage and advised him that 'Tor procuring the sharj^ memory, you must meditate upon the goddess The sun god who happens to be the lord of both of them disappeared after thus speaking and the sage with his mind filled with devotion started adoring the goddess offering prayers.
Yajnavalkya said—“O mother of the universe, my glory has vanished because of the curse of my teacher. I have also been deprived of my learnings and mcmoiy. Therefore you be graceful on me.
O goddess of learning, bestow the divine knowledge, memory, learnings, glory and the ability to create poetry besides the competence to teach my pupils and to compose scriptures.
Besides that, you take me as your glorious and well established pupil. You bestow the competence on me to speak in the assembly of noble and glorious people.
The learnings which I have unfortunately lost earlier, may kindly be restored to me again as the lord creates new lives with the help of his I bow in reverence to the goddess Sarasvatl again and again who is the form of Brahman, bears eternal flame and is the goddess of Without whom the entire universe looks as dead inspite of being alive. I bow in reverence to Sarasvatl, the goddess of learnings again and Without life the deaf and dumb are excited one, I bow in reverence to the goddess of speech again and again.
You are the one, having the complexion of snow, sandai-pastc, lotus, lotus flower, the moon and the white lotus and you are the supreme goddess of all the letters, I bow in reverence to the goddess Sarasvatl again and again.
You are supreme goddess of Visarga, Bindu and Md{rd\ thus the noble people recite your glory. 1 bow in reverence again and again to the goddess Bharati.
I bow in reverence to the one who is the goddess of counting and counts all the creatures in the universe. I bow in reverence to her again and again.
At that point of time lord Krsna arrived there and apprised Brahma of the best stotra of qimriR: I At the command of the lord, Brahma adored the goddess Sarasvatl by reciting the same stotra and thereafter was successful in explaining the Similarly once the goddess PrthvI discussed about the eternal knowledge with serpent Ananta but he too could not speak on the principle and Thereafter the nervous serpent king adored the goddess Sarasvatl and thereafter established the principle which removed all the doubts.
I bow in reverence to the one who is the goddess of principle and also explains the various types of principles, removing all the doubts. I bow in reverence to such a type of goddess again and again.
Once the sage Vyasa questioned the sage Valmiki about gist of the Puranas who could not speak anything and kept quiet. Thereafter he started reciting your name in the form of the mother of the universe.
I bow in reverence to the goddess again and again who sharpens the memory increases knowledge, intelligence, glory and the sense of Once Sanat-kumara question to Brahma about the knowledge but Brahma in lum became motionless being unable to speak on the fegpr I By your grace the sage spelt out the principle to him who achieved the great knowledge after getting his pride shattered.
Thereafter Vyasa, who was bom of the ray of lord Krsna listened to the Sutra of the Puranas and went to the Puskara region, where he meditated upon goddess Sarasvatl for a hundred years. After having been blessed by goddess Sarasvatl, he became a great poet. At that point of lime he divided the Vedas and also created Puranas. At the time when Parvatl had question lord Siva about the knowledge of tattva, dwelling over the Mahendra mountain, Siva at that point of time meditated upon you for a moment and imparted the divine knowledge to Parvatl.
Thereafter Indra desired to know about the grammar for Brhaspati, went to the Puskara Ks etra and meditated upon Sarasvatl for a hundred O supreme goddess, such of the sages who themselves studied and imparted for knowledge to their students, could do so, only after meditating upon you in a proper manner.
O best of the sages, the Manugana, the Daitya, the gods, Brahma, Visnu and Siva have adored goddess Sarasvatl offering prayers to her. By reciting whose glory even the gods like Brahma, Siva and Sesa had to keep quite then how can a person like me having only one face can recite your glory.
Thus speaking Yajnavalkya bowed before her in reverence with his mind filled with devotion and keeping fast went on weeping again and At that point of time the invisible Sarasvatl spoke to him declaring, “You will become an eminent poet.” Thus speaking she left for The immensely foolish and the one having the little intelligence if recites this stotra for a year, he surely gains intelligence and becomes a great
