श्रीमहादेव उवाच ।। शृणु पार्वति वक्ष्यामि तव भद्रं भविष्यति ।। उपायतः कार्य्यसिद्धिर्भवत्येव जगत्त्रये ।। १ ।। सर्ववांछितसिद्धेस्तु बीजरूपं सुमङ्गलम् ।। मनसः प्रीतिजनकमुपायं कथयामि ते ।।२।। हरेराराधनं कृत्वा व्रतं कुरु वरानने ।। व्रतं च पुण्यकं नाम वर्षमेकं करिष्यसि।।३।। महाकठोरबीजं च वाञ्छाकल्पतरुं परम् ।। सुखदं पुण्यदं सारं पुत्रदं सर्वसौख्यदम् ।।४।। नदीनां च यथा गंगा देवानां च हरिर्यथा ।। वैष्णवानां यथाहं च देवीनां त्वं यथा प्रिये ।।५।। वर्णानां च यथा विप्रस्तीर्थानां पुष्करं यथा ।। पुष्पाणां पारिजातं च पत्राणां तुलसी यथा ।। ६ ।। यथा पुण्यप्रदानां च तिथिरेकादशी स्मृता।। रविवारश्च वाराणां यथा पुण्यप्रदः शिवे ।। मासानां मार्गशीर्षश्चाप्यृतूनां माधवो यथा ।। ७ ।। संवत्सरो वत्सराणां युगानां च कृतं यथा ।। विद्याप्रदश्च पूज्यानां गुरूणां जननी यथा ।। साध्वी पत्नी यथाप्तानां विश्वस्तानां मनो यथा ।। ८ ।। यथा धनानां रत्नं च प्रियाणां च यथा पतिः ।। यथा पुत्रश्च बन्धूनां वृक्षाणां कल्पपादपः ।।९।। फलानां वै चूतफलं वर्षाणां भारतं तथा।। वृन्दावनं वनानां च शतरूपा च योषिताम् ।। १० ।। यथा काशी पुरीणां च सूर्य्यस्तेजस्विनां यथा ।। यथेन्दुः सुखदानां च सुन्दराणां च मन्मथः ।। ११ ।। शास्त्राणां च यथा वेदाः सिद्धानां कपिलो यथा ।। हनूमान्वानराणां च क्षेत्राणां ब्राह्मणाननम् ।। १२ ।। यशोदानां यथा विद्या कविता च मनोहरा ।। आकाशो व्यापकानां च ह्यंगानां लोचनं यथा ।। १३ ।। विभवानां हरिकथा सुखानां हरिचिन्तनम् ।। स्पर्शानां पुत्रसंस्पर्शो हिंस्राणां च यथा खलः ।।१४।। पापानां च यथा मिथ्या पापिनां पुंश्चली यथा ।। पुण्यानां च यथा सत्यं तपसां हरिसेवनम् ।। १५ ।। यथा घृतं च गव्यानां यथा ब्रह्मा तपस्विनाम्।। अमृतं भक्ष्यवस्तूनां सस्यानां धान्यकं यथा ।। १६ ।। पुण्यदानां यथा तोयं शुद्धानां च हुताशनः ।। सुवर्णं तैजसानां च मिष्टानां प्रियभाषणम् ।। १७ ।। गरुडः पक्षिणां चैव हस्तिनामिन्द्रवाहनम् ।। योगिनां च कुमारश्च देवर्षीणां च नारदः ।। १८ ।। गन्धर्वाणां चित्ररथो जीवो बुद्धिमतां यथा ।। सुकवीनां यथा शुक्रः काव्यानां च पुराणकम् ।। १९ ।। स्रोतस्वतां समुद्रश्च यथा पृथ्वी क्षमावताम् ।। लाभानां च यथा मुक्तिर्हरिभक्तिश्च सम्पदाम् ।। २० ।। पवित्राणां वैष्णवाश्च वर्णानां प्रणवो यथा ।। विष्णुमन्त्रश्च मन्त्राणां बीजानां प्रकृतिर्यथा ।। २१ ।। विदुषां च यथा वाणी गायत्री छन्दसां यथा ।। यथा कुबेरो यक्षाणां सर्पाणां वासुकिर्यथा ।। २२ ।। यथा पिता ते शैलानां गवां च सुरभिर्यथा ।। वेदानां सामवेदश्च तृणानां च यथा कुशः ।। २३ ।। सुखदानां यथा लक्ष्मीर्मनो वै शीघ्रगामिनाम् ।। अक्षराणामकारश्च यथा तातो हितैषिणाम् ।। २४ ।। शालग्रामश्च मूर्तीनां पर्शूनां विष्णुपञ्जरः ।। चतुष्पदानां पञ्चास्यो मानवो जीविनां यथा ।। २५ ।। यथा स्वान्तं चेन्द्रियाणां मन्दाग्निश्च रुजां यथा ।। बलिनां च यथा शक्तिरहं शक्तिमतां तथा ।। २६ ।। महान्विराट् च स्थूलानां सूक्ष्माणां परमाणुकः ।। यथेन्द्र आदितेयानां दैत्यानां च बलिर्यथा ।। २७ ।। यथा दधीचिर्दातॄणां प्रह्रादश्चैव साधुषु ।। ब्रह्मास्त्रं च यथाऽस्त्राणां चक्राणां च सुदर्शनम् ।। २८।। नृणां राजा रामचन्द्रो धन्विनां लक्ष्मणो यथा ।। सर्वाधारः सर्वसेव्यः सर्वबीजं च सर्वदः।। सर्वसारो यथा कृष्णो व्रतानां पुण्यकं यथा।।२९।। व्रतं कुरु महाभागे त्रिषु लोकेषु दुर्लभम् ।। सर्वश्रेष्ठश्च पुत्रस्ते व्रतादेव भविष्यति ।। ३० ।। व्रताराध्यश्च वै कृष्णः सर्वेषां वाञ्छितप्रदः ।। जनो यत्सेवनान्मुक्तः पितृभिः कोटिभिः सह।। ।। ३१ ।। हरिमन्त्रं गृहीत्वा च हरिसेवां करोति यः ।। भारते जन्म सफलं स्वात्मनः स करोति च ।। ३२ ।। उद्धृत्य कोटिपुरुषान्वैकुण्ठं याति निश्चितम् ।। श्रीकृष्णपार्षदो भूत्वा सुखं तत्रैव मोदते ।। ३३ ।। सहोदरान्स्वभृत्यांश्च स्वबन्धून्सहचारिणः ।। स्वस्त्रियश्च समुद्धृत्य भक्तो याति हरेः पदम् ।। ३४ ।। ' तस्माद्गृहाण गिरिजे हरेर्म्मन्त्रं सुदुर्लभम् ।। जप मन्त्रं व्रते तत्र पितॄणां मुक्तिकारणम्।। ।। ३५ ।। इत्युक्त्वा शंकरो देवो गत्वा गिरिजया सह ।। शीघ्रं च जाह्नवीतीरं हरेर्म्मन्त्रं मनोहरम् ।। ३६ ।। तस्यै ददौ च संप्रीत्या कवचं स्तोत्रसंयुतम् ।। पूजाविधाननियमं कथयामास तां मुने ।। ३७ ।। इति श्रीब्रह्मवैवर्त्ते महापुराणे तृतीये गणपतिखण्डे नारदनारायणसंवादे तृतीयोऽध्यायः ।। ३ ।।

śrīmahādeva uvāca || śṛṇu pārvati vakṣyāmi tava bhadraṃ bhaviṣyati || upāyataḥ kāryyasiddhirbhavatyeva jagattraye || 1 || sarvavāṃchitasiddhestu bījarūpaṃ sumaṅgalam || manasaḥ prītijanakamupāyaṃ kathayāmi te ||2|| harerārādhanaṃ kṛtvā vrataṃ kuru varānane || vrataṃ ca puṇyakaṃ nāma varṣamekaṃ kariṣyasi||3|| mahākaṭhorabījaṃ ca vāñchākalpataruṃ param || sukhadaṃ puṇyadaṃ sāraṃ putradaṃ sarvasaukhyadam ||4|| nadīnāṃ ca yathā gaṃgā devānāṃ ca hariryathā || vaiṣṇavānāṃ yathāhaṃ ca devīnāṃ tvaṃ yathā priye ||5|| varṇānāṃ ca yathā viprastīrthānāṃ puṣkaraṃ yathā || puṣpāṇāṃ pārijātaṃ ca patrāṇāṃ tulasī yathā || 6 || yathā puṇyapradānāṃ ca tithirekādaśī smṛtā|| ravivāraśca vārāṇāṃ yathā puṇyapradaḥ śive || māsānāṃ mārgaśīrṣaścāpyṛtūnāṃ mādhavo yathā || 7 || saṃvatsaro vatsarāṇāṃ yugānāṃ ca kṛtaṃ yathā || vidyāpradaśca pūjyānāṃ gurūṇāṃ jananī yathā || sādhvī patnī yathāptānāṃ viśvastānāṃ mano yathā || 8 || yathā dhanānāṃ ratnaṃ ca priyāṇāṃ ca yathā patiḥ || yathā putraśca bandhūnāṃ vṛkṣāṇāṃ kalpapādapaḥ ||9|| phalānāṃ vai cūtaphalaṃ varṣāṇāṃ bhārataṃ tathā|| vṛndāvanaṃ vanānāṃ ca śatarūpā ca yoṣitām || 10 || yathā kāśī purīṇāṃ ca sūryyastejasvināṃ yathā || yathenduḥ sukhadānāṃ ca sundarāṇāṃ ca manmathaḥ || 11 || śāstrāṇāṃ ca yathā vedāḥ siddhānāṃ kapilo yathā || hanūmānvānarāṇāṃ ca kṣetrāṇāṃ brāhmaṇānanam || 12 || yaśodānāṃ yathā vidyā kavitā ca manoharā || ākāśo vyāpakānāṃ ca hyaṃgānāṃ locanaṃ yathā || 13 || vibhavānāṃ harikathā sukhānāṃ haricintanam || sparśānāṃ putrasaṃsparśo hiṃsrāṇāṃ ca yathā khalaḥ ||14|| pāpānāṃ ca yathā mithyā pāpināṃ puṃścalī yathā || puṇyānāṃ ca yathā satyaṃ tapasāṃ harisevanam || 15 || yathā ghṛtaṃ ca gavyānāṃ yathā brahmā tapasvinām|| amṛtaṃ bhakṣyavastūnāṃ sasyānāṃ dhānyakaṃ yathā || 16 || puṇyadānāṃ yathā toyaṃ śuddhānāṃ ca hutāśanaḥ || suvarṇaṃ taijasānāṃ ca miṣṭānāṃ priyabhāṣaṇam || 17 || garuḍaḥ pakṣiṇāṃ caiva hastināmindravāhanam || yogināṃ ca kumāraśca devarṣīṇāṃ ca nāradaḥ || 18 || gandharvāṇāṃ citraratho jīvo buddhimatāṃ yathā || sukavīnāṃ yathā śukraḥ kāvyānāṃ ca purāṇakam || 19 || srotasvatāṃ samudraśca yathā pṛthvī kṣamāvatām || lābhānāṃ ca yathā muktirharibhaktiśca sampadām || 20 || pavitrāṇāṃ vaiṣṇavāśca varṇānāṃ praṇavo yathā || viṣṇumantraśca mantrāṇāṃ bījānāṃ prakṛtiryathā || 21 || viduṣāṃ ca yathā vāṇī gāyatrī chandasāṃ yathā || yathā kubero yakṣāṇāṃ sarpāṇāṃ vāsukiryathā || 22 || yathā pitā te śailānāṃ gavāṃ ca surabhiryathā || vedānāṃ sāmavedaśca tṛṇānāṃ ca yathā kuśaḥ || 23 || sukhadānāṃ yathā lakṣmīrmano vai śīghragāminām || akṣarāṇāmakāraśca yathā tāto hitaiṣiṇām || 24 || śālagrāmaśca mūrtīnāṃ parśūnāṃ viṣṇupañjaraḥ || catuṣpadānāṃ pañcāsyo mānavo jīvināṃ yathā || 25 || yathā svāntaṃ cendriyāṇāṃ mandāgniśca rujāṃ yathā || balināṃ ca yathā śaktirahaṃ śaktimatāṃ tathā || 26 || mahānvirāṭ ca sthūlānāṃ sūkṣmāṇāṃ paramāṇukaḥ || yathendra āditeyānāṃ daityānāṃ ca baliryathā || 27 || yathā dadhīcirdātṝṇāṃ prahrādaścaiva sādhuṣu || brahmāstraṃ ca yathā'strāṇāṃ cakrāṇāṃ ca sudarśanam || 28|| nṛṇāṃ rājā rāmacandro dhanvināṃ lakṣmaṇo yathā || sarvādhāraḥ sarvasevyaḥ sarvabījaṃ ca sarvadaḥ|| sarvasāro yathā kṛṣṇo vratānāṃ puṇyakaṃ yathā||29|| vrataṃ kuru mahābhāge triṣu lokeṣu durlabham || sarvaśreṣṭhaśca putraste vratādeva bhaviṣyati || 30 || vratārādhyaśca vai kṛṣṇaḥ sarveṣāṃ vāñchitapradaḥ || jano yatsevanānmuktaḥ pitṛbhiḥ koṭibhiḥ saha|| || 31 || harimantraṃ gṛhītvā ca harisevāṃ karoti yaḥ || bhārate janma saphalaṃ svātmanaḥ sa karoti ca || 32 || uddhṛtya koṭipuruṣānvaikuṇṭhaṃ yāti niścitam || śrīkṛṣṇapārṣado bhūtvā sukhaṃ tatraiva modate || 33 || sahodarānsvabhṛtyāṃśca svabandhūnsahacāriṇaḥ || svastriyaśca samuddhṛtya bhakto yāti hareḥ padam || 34 || ' tasmādgṛhāṇa girije harermmantraṃ sudurlabham || japa mantraṃ vrate tatra pitṝṇāṃ muktikāraṇam|| || 35 || ityuktvā śaṃkaro devo gatvā girijayā saha || śīghraṃ ca jāhnavītīraṃ harermmantraṃ manoharam || 36 || tasyai dadau ca saṃprītyā kavacaṃ stotrasaṃyutam || pūjāvidhānaniyamaṃ kathayāmāsa tāṃ mune || 37 || iti śrībrahmavaivartte mahāpurāṇe tṛtīye gaṇapatikhaṇḍe nāradanārāyaṇasaṃvāde tṛtīyo'dhyāyaḥ || 3 ||

English translation

The Performing of vrata by Parvati for getting a son Mahadeva said - O Parvati listen to me, I am telling you something which will provide welfare to you. One gets success by attending to the remedies against adversities in the universe. I am going to tell you a remedy which will be the cause of meeting with success.

It shall bestow success, welfare and love in one's mind.

Sarasvatl among the intelligent people, Gayatrl among the metres, Kubera among the Yaksas, Vasuki among the serpents, Himvan among the mountains, Surabhi among the cows, Samaveda among the Vedas, kus'a among the grass, LaksmT among the those v/ho provide pleasure, the mind out of the those which move with speed, the form in the letter, the father among the well-wishers, Sdlagrdma among the images, Sudars'ana-cakra among the weapons, lion among the quadrupeds, human among all the creatures, the mind among all the organ of senses, indigestion among the ailments, prowess among all the warriors; I myself among the valorous person, Mahavirat among the solid people, the atom among the smallest things, Indra among the sons of Aditi, Bali among the Daityas, Dadhici among those who perform the charity, Prahlada among the noble people, Brahmdstra among the weapons, Sudarsana among the cakras, the king Rama

among the humans, Laksmana among the archers who is the base of all, served by all, the seed of all, the bestower of everything and his essence is lord Krsna. Similar is the case with Punyaka vrata. O virtuous one, you perform this vrata which is difficult to get in the three worlds. With the influence of this vrata you will achieve an influential son.

Lord Krsna happens to be the, main deity of this mantra who fulfils all the desires and by adoring whom one redeems crores of his Whosoever recites the mantra of the lord in the land of Bharata, his life meets with success.

He also redeems crores of his generations and ultimately achieves Vaikuntha where he serves Such a person after redeeming his brothers, servants, associates and the ladies of the household, proceeds to the house of the lord. O Parvatl, therefore, you accept the mantra of the lord which is difficult to get and which redeems the manes; thereafter, lord Siva went to the bank of Gaiiga together with Parvatl and imparted the knowledge of the sacred mantra of the lord of Parvatl O sage, he also explained to her the kavaca, stotra and method of adoration to her.

Parvati said - O best of the gods, O lord, O ocean of compassion, O beloved of the down¬ trodden, you are beyond everything and therefore, you kindly tell me what materials are required for this vrata and what is the reward, what is the time for it, the regulations, the eatables, the method and reward thereof? O lord, you also tell me about the best of the priests, the Brahmanas who adore with flowers and servants who collect the material.

What else is required for this vrata^ I am not aware of it. You kindly arrange for everything because the husband has to provide everything for the wife.
