Hiraṇyagarbha and Brahmā

10 verses

From the form of the fourteen-fold cosmos, you, Lord, were born again above, in Satyaloka, as Brahmā the creator, whom the wise call Hiraṇyagarbha, the all-three-worlds-having-life. The daśaka traces the descent: the impersonal becomes the cosmic body becomes the personal creator god.

Daśaka 7, Verse 1
एवं देव चतुर्दशात्मकजगद्रूपेण जातः पुन
स्तस्योर्ध्वं खलु सत्यलोकनिलये जातोऽसि धाता स्वयम।
यं शंसन्ति हिरण्यगर्भमखिलत्रैलोक्यजीवात्मकं
योऽभूत् स्फीतरजोविकारविकसन्नानासिसृक्षारसः

evaṁ deva caturdaśātmakajagadrūpeṇa jātaḥ puna stasyordhvaṁ khalu satyalokanilaye jāto'si dhātā svayama yaṁ śaṁsanti hiraṇyagarbhamakhilatrailokyajīvātmakaṁ yo'bhūt sphītarajovikāravikasannānāsisṛkṣārasaḥ

Lord, having become the fourteen-fold cosmos, you were then born again. Above that, in the seat of Satyaloka, you became the creator yourself, the one whom they call Hiraṇyagarbha, the very life of all three worlds, who came to be from the swelling rajas-mode, ready for the work of creation.

Daśaka 7, Verse 2
सोऽयं विश्विसर्गदत्तहृदयस्सम्पश्यमानस्स्वयं
बोधं खल्वनवाष्य विश्वविषयं चिन्ताकुलस्तस्थिवान।
तावत् त्वं जगतांपते तपतपेत्येवं हि वैहायसीं
वाणीमेनमशिश्रवः श्रुतिसुखां कुर्वंस्तपःप्रेरणाम्

so'yaṁ viśvisargadattahṛdayassampaśyamānassvayaṁ bodhaṁ khalvanavāṣya viśvaviṣayaṁ cintākulastasthivāna tāvat tvaṁ jagatāṁpate tapatapetyevaṁ hi vaihāyasīṁ vāṇīmenamaśiśravaḥ śrutisukhāṁ kurvaṁstapaḥpreraṇām

He, given a heart full of the wish to make the universe, looking around himself, did not find the body of awareness, the universe-knowing power. Anxious he stood. Then, lord of the world, you let him hear the voice in the sky, sweet to the ear: 'tapa, tapa', practise austerity. Hearing it, he began.

Daśaka 7, Verse 3
कोऽसौ मामवदत्पुमानिति जलापूर्णे जगन्मण्डले
दिक्षूद्वीक्ष्य किमप्यनीक्षितवता वाक्यार्थमुत्पश्यता।
दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रमात्तपसा तेन त्वमाराधित
स्तस्मै दर्शितवानसि स्वनिलयं वैकुण्ठमेकाद्भुतम्

ko'sau māmavadatpumāniti jalāpūrṇe jaganmaṇḍale dikṣūdvīkṣya kimapyanīkṣitavatā vākyārthamutpaśyatā divyaṁ varṣasahasramāttapasā tena tvamārādhita stasmai darśitavānasi svanilayaṁ vaikuṇṭhamekādbhutam

'Who spoke to me?' he wondered. Looking around in all directions in the water-filled cosmic sphere, seeing no one yet hearing the meaning of the words clearly, he performed austerity for a thousand divine years. Worshipped by his austerity, you showed him your own dwelling, Vaikuṇṭha, the wonder of wonders.

Daśaka 7, Verse 4
माया यत्र कदापि नो विकुरुते भाते जगद्भ्यो बहि
श्शोकक्रोधविमोहसाध्वसमुखा भावास्तु दूरं गताः।
सान्द्रानन्दझरी च यत्र परमज्योतिःप्रकाशात्मके
तत् ते धाम विभावितं विजयते वैकुण्ठरूपं विभो

māyā yatra kadāpi no vikurute bhāte jagadbhyo bahi śśokakrodhavimohasādhvasamukhā bhāvāstu dūraṁ gatāḥ sāndrānandajharī ca yatra paramajyotiḥprakāśātmake tat te dhāma vibhāvitaṁ vijayate vaikuṇṭharūpaṁ vibho

Where māyā never alters, where, beyond all worlds, sorrow, anger, delusion, and fear are far away; where the dense flood of bliss runs, in the form of the highest light: that abode of yours, perceived inwardly, may it be victorious. Vaikuṇṭha-form.

Daśaka 7, Verse 5
यस्मिन्नाम चतुर्भुजा हरिमणिश्यामावदातत्विषो
नानाभूषणरत्नदीपितदिशो राजद्विमानालयाः।
भक्तिप्राप्ततथाविधोन्नतपदा दीव्यन्ति दिव्या जना
स्तत्ते धाम निरस्तसर्वशमलं वैकुण्ठरूपं जयेत्

yasminnāma caturbhujā harimaṇiśyāmāvadātatviṣo nānābhūṣaṇaratnadīpitadiśo rājadvimānālayāḥ bhaktiprāptatathāvidhonnatapadā dīvyanti divyā janā statte dhāma nirastasarvaśamalaṁ vaikuṇṭharūpaṁ jayet

Where the four-armed ones, dark as Hari-blue gems, with various ornaments, lighting up the directions, dwell in the shining vimāna-houses; the divine people who have reached such high rank by devotion, sport. Stainless of every blemish: may that abode of yours be victorious.

Daśaka 7, Verse 6
नानादिव्यवधूजनैरभिवृता विद्युल्लतातुल्यया
विश्वोन्मादनहृद्यगात्रलतया विद्योतिताशान्तरा।
त्वत्पादांबुजसौरभैककुतुकाल्लक्ष्मीः स्वयं लक्ष्यते
यस्मिन् विस्मयनीयदिव्यविभवं तत्ते पदं देहि मे

nānādivyavadhūjanairabhivṛtā vidyullatātulyayā viśvonmādanahṛdyagātralatayā vidyotitāśāntarā tvatpādāṁbujasaurabhaikakutukāllakṣmīḥ svayaṁ lakṣyate yasmin vismayanīyadivyavibhavaṁ tatte padaṁ dehi me

Surrounded by many divine maidens, with bodies like lightning, intoxicating the universe with their beautiful limbs, illumining the inner directions; Lakṣmī herself is seen, drawn by the sole longing to perceive the fragrance of your lotus feet. That place of wondrous divine glory, give to me.

Daśaka 7, Verse 7
तत्रैवं प्रतिदर्शिते निजपदे रत्नासनाध्यासितं
भास्वत्कोटिलसत्किरीटकटकाद्याकल्पदीपाकृति।
श्रीवत्साङ्कितमात्तकौस्तुभमणिचछायारुणं कारणं
विश्वेषां तव रूपमैक्षत विधिस्तत्ते विभो भातु मे

tatraivaṁ pratidarśite nijapade ratnāsanādhyāsitaṁ bhāsvatkoṭilasatkirīṭakaṭakādyākalpadīpākṛti śrīvatsāṅkitamāttakaustubhamaṇicachāyāruṇaṁ kāraṇaṁ viśveṣāṁ tava rūpamaikṣata vidhistatte vibho bhātu me

Thus, when his own seat had been shown to him, on a gem-throne sat the form: shining with crores of bright crowns, wreaths, ornaments, the lamp of beauty, marked with the Śrīvatsa, reddened by the brilliance of the kaustubha gem. Brahmā saw the cause of all worlds. May that form, lord, shine for me.

Daśaka 7, Verse 8
काळांभोदकळायकोमळरुचीचक्रेण चक्रं दिशा
मावृण्वानमुदारमन्दहसितस्यन्दप्रसन्नाननम।
राजत्कम्बुगदारिपङ्कजधरश्रीमद्भुजामण्डलं
स्रष्टुस्तुष्टिकरं वपुस्तव विभो मद्रोगमुद्वासयेत्

kāḻāṁbhodakaḻāyakomaḻarucīcakreṇa cakraṁ diśā māvṛṇvānamudāramandahasitasyandaprasannānanama rājatkambugadāripaṅkajadharaśrīmadbhujāmaṇḍalaṁ sraṣṭustuṣṭikaraṁ vapustava vibho madrogamudvāsayet

Wrapping the directions with the discus equal in radiance to the dark-blue kalāya petal-circle, with a face serene from the flow of a generous gentle smile, with circles of arms holding the bright conch, mace, discus, lotus, joy-giving to the creator. May that form lift my disease.

Daśaka 7, Verse 9
दृष्ट्वा संभृतसंभ्रमः कमलभूस्त्वत्पादपाथोरुहे
हर्षावेशवशंवदो निपतितः प्रीत्या कृतार्थीभवन।
जानास्येव मनीषितं मम विभो ज्ञानं तदापादय
द्वैताद्वैतभवत्स्वरूपपरमित्याचष्ट तं त्वां भजे

dṛṣṭvā saṁbhṛtasaṁbhramaḥ kamalabhūstvatpādapāthoruhe harṣāveśavaśaṁvado nipatitaḥ prītyā kṛtārthībhavana jānāsyeva manīṣitaṁ mama vibho jñānaṁ tadāpādaya dvaitādvaitabhavatsvarūpaparamityācaṣṭa taṁ tvāṁ bhaje

Seeing it, Brahmā, full of agitation, fell at your lotus feet in a flood of joy, becoming successful. 'Lord, you know the wish of my mind. Give me the knowledge that brings forth the duality and non-duality of your own true nature,' he said.

Daśaka 7, Verse 10
आताम्रे चरणे विनम्रमथ तं हस्तेन हस्ते स्पृशन्
बोधस्ते भविता न सर्गविधिबिर्बन्धोऽपि सञ्जायते।
इत्याभाष्य गिरं प्रतोष्यनितरां तच्चित्तगूढः स्वयं
सृष्टौ तं समुदैरयस्स भगवन्नुल्लासयोल्लाघताम्

ātāmre caraṇe vinamramatha taṁ hastena haste spṛśan bodhaste bhavitā na sargavidhibirbandho'pi sañjāyate ityābhāṣya giraṁ pratoṣyanitarāṁ taccittagūḍhaḥ svayaṁ sṛṣṭau taṁ samudairayassa bhagavannullāsayollāghatām

Touching with his hand the head of the bowed-down one upon the reddish foot, you said: 'Knowledge will come to you. The bond of creation will not entrap you.' Speaking thus, you greatly pleased him; hidden in his heart, you spurred him on for creation. Lord, may that delight be mine.
