Translation of page 45

These eyes are chakora birds thirsting for the moon of his face; let them drink deeply of that beauty—why hide yourself, O trickster?

These keen eyes have cast away all sense and reason; what greater reward could they receive than the sight of darling Sita?

Smiling softly, the wise and loving women gaze upon them; overcome with joy, they offer body and mind again and again.

Pada 46

Come, come today, bridegroom, into our courtyard; all the wedding rites will be performed for you here.

Why do you walk that way, bridegroom, when going to your mother-in-law’s house? Everyone will laugh when they see your gait.

Walk gently, gently, bridegroom—do not take such enormous strides; your darling sister-in-law will seize you by the nose!

One after another, all the sakhis pour ritual abuse upon you: “Did no one teach you how to walk, bridegroom? Your sisters are shameless!”

The four bridegrooms laugh at their sisters-in-law’s teasing; Kanakalata is utterly enchanted with the bridegroom.

Pada 47

O connoisseur of Raghu’s line, drenched in rasa, come to the pavilion overflowing with the essence of joy.

He plants each foot with the grandeur of a lordly elephant, while the mother who bore him takes his hand.

Hearing the women’s words, the beloved strides ahead, moving as though he were a master acrobat.
