Translation of page 36

His earrings flash at his ears like shields, dear friend; his spreading curls form a net in which to snare us, dear friend. His lovely lips glow like pomegranate, dear friend; between them his teeth flash sharp as a sword, dear friend. Let someone flee, or hide herself in darkness, dear friend— the radiance of his nose-pearl floods even that place with light, dear friend. He comes slaughtering men and women alike, dear friend; the mighty warrior neither pauses nor retreats, dear friend. Let every tenderhearted soul beware, dear friend— yet our darling bride is mightier even than he, dear friend.

Pada 29

The bridegroom has reached the doorway—look, look, fair women! Mounted upon his horse, the bridegroom has come to the door, while the music thunders. Herd upon herd of caparisoned elephants arrives, with paired carriages, stallions, and mares. The bearers come grunting “hum, hum,” carrying brocaded, rattling litters. With all the lights, the night appears as bright as midday; rockets burst and the earth trembles. Sita's mother comes again and again, absorbed in love, having prepared the articles for parichhan. The bridegroom smiles behind his handkerchief; joy wells up as he casts a glance toward Mod.

Parichhan — Pada 30

The honored guest has reached the threshold—come, let us perform parichhan! Listen, listen, auspicious married women: you who adore the divine couple, companions and attendants, thirsty for the Beloved's love—come, all together, and receive the fruit of your eyes. Steady the ritual basket; take turmeric and paired blades of durva grass, curds and fragrant offerings; adorn your necks with yellow—come, sweet-throated women, and sing the songs of blessing. Uma, Rama, Bharati, and Sachi rejoice within; yearning for the sight, they assume beautiful forms. Come, mingle together, sing, and offer yourselves again and again.
